Noordermarkt: My Favorite Flea Market In Amsterdam

I'm just back from a few days in Amsterdam to attend Woonbeurs, the annual home design show. Whenever I'm there, I try and make it to the outdoor market near the Noorderkirk in the Jordaan neighborhood. This past Saturday morning was the ideal day to visit, sunny, warm and packed with locals looking for bric-a-brac bargains...

There are two markets at this location each week - on Saturdays, its vintage goods (home decor stuff, books, clothes) and organic eats. On Mondays, it features more furniture and textiles.

There is booth after booth of wonderful dusty finds to dig through with very affordable asking prices. For example, I brought home an amazing little round Chinoiserie box in black and gold - very old and only 15 euro. (Yes, if I lived there, I have the feeling it would be a regular haunt).

I snapped the pics above to give you an idea of what was on sale this past week - it's indicative of the items I've seen there in the past as well - lots of domestic goods with a (naturally!) European flair - which makes everything just that bit more interesting and exotic to someone used to seeing good old americana items while thrifting here at home.

Add in the location in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city, the happy sounds of the kids enjoying the playground (which is located smack in the middle of the market) and the amazing people watching from the surrounding cafes and it is a most excellent way to spend a few hours of your precious time in Amsterdam.

I highly recommend a stop if you happen to be in the city on the "right" days.
