Name: Christine
Location: Fair Oaks, Ca
Type of Home: Cottage
What inspired you to use color? My budget! I have a cottage with ancient cabinets, plywood kitchen flooring and no interesting architectural features in the rest of the house. I couldn't afford to upgrade so used color (lots of it) to disguise the flaws. I stained the plywood turquoise, painted the floor red, then rubbed some of the red away (where I had put on wax) exposing the turquoise......This gave the look of a worn kitchen floor that matched the old cabinets. I painted the cabinets five colors to camouflage their age. The living room pink is neither sugary or babyish - a relaxing color that has added punch with turquoise accents. I stained wide planks brown for the bookshelves and used other brown touches to make the room more masculine in spite of the pink. The bedroom is a soothing green with thrift store oil paintings and multicolored fabrics providing color and interest.
Color Tip: Have a vision - this "idea" is something that you can go back to when the color choices seem confusing. My image was of a Caribbean Island, full of color and brightness but also light and airy. The sheer white curtains in the pink living room, the warm yellow kitchen walls and the tropical ocean blue of the guest bedroom all remind me of "Island time". We all have different preferences in regard to color, an image will help you design a cohesive scheme - be it the lilac fields and orchards of Provence, an Indian bazaar, a Mondrian painting, the choices are limitless.
Colors Used: Most colors were custom mixed or matched, but the kitchen walls are ACE "Smiley Face" and the bedroom walls are Pratt and Lambert "Sherwood"

White Enamel Four-P...
This is absolutely wonderful! It's one of the best uses of color I've seen...ever, because it's so youthful, and functional. Wonderful juxtaposition between innovation and the norm! =)
Oh, just noticed! I have that Kitchenaid mixer! it's like my child! Also, pink fridge= pure genius!
Oh, my God! This should totally win. It's gorgeous.
Christine, you are one bold and fearless woman! I love your pink fridge with matching pink kitchen accoutrements, and the blue chandelier is really pretty.
OK, AT--I dare you to make this the winner of the Fall COLOURS contest. It would be impossible to be unhappy in this place. I know, many will protest "overboard," but exuberance is catching. Reminds me of Diamond Barratta colours.
the mothership has landed and I must go... what an entry!
heh, I would LOVE living here... and I think all of my birds would too! The husband would probably hate it though... :/ Maybe if I were to get him drunk enough and put a giant tv with a game console he wouldn't even notice! :D
sorry, I meant "Baratta"--and birds?! my birds would LOVE it, too. good point.
i really like it, except the kitchen cabinets are a bit much for me.
This is fabulous! Such a great entry. I thought I was seeing things, but it IS a pink fridge!
This is like living in a candy store. A very artfully designed candy store. Adorable house and I am feeling slightly resentful that I would never ben able to convince my husband to do this for even our bedroom!=)
Wow...
How can u not love such a bright, and happy home like this? It instantly lifts up your mood!
Note: This is coming from a person who loathes pink.
I would be ecstatic to spend a weekend as a guest in your home. It is refreshing, colorful but not overwelming to the eye, and full of cheer. And I absolutely LOVE the kitchen floor!
I love it reminds me of homes I stayed in Puebla and San Miguel Allende, Mexico.
I saw this house on the Simpsons- too much color!
God, I want to EAT your house! I don't know why Alice in Wonderland comes to mind when I look at the pics, but heck, I love it. Pretty, happy, what I wish my place could be!
Other than the overload of stimulus in the kitchen, the rest of your home is lovely and vibrant. I'm really impressed with both bedrooms and the character of your individual pieces.
I couldn't live here, but would really enjoy visiting and soaking up the vibe. It would be like hanging out in Pee Wee's Playhouse (in a good way). Very fun.
Whoa... I feel so overloaded!
I can totally imagine myself relaxing in a guest house like this on a Carribbean vacation, though, so I think the color theme worked perfectly!
This is the absolute spirit of the contest! And that there isn't one single Barcelona chair/Eames Recliner? Even better!
Wow! Hello Roger Rabbit in Toontown! Funtabulous!
This is what this colour contest is all about: having a designer's eye... and gonads. Goodonya!
Wow. It must be so much fun to go shopping and see something you like and not have to worry/wonder if the colour matches your house. Everything would match this place. What fun!
What a cheerful, fun home!! So much colour is usually badly done, but this is fun and fabulous! A definite winner!
Love all the color! Great job.
This is just wonderful. And for those who constantly whine about contestants on this site who show expensive renovations with large budgets, here's proof of what can be done with very little money and a keen understanding of color.
Other than the bold use of color, this homeowner also has an eye for collecting. I especially like the arrangement of floral paintings. Individually, each may look like the product of an adult ed art class, but grouped, they make a strong statement.
Absolutely fantastic - I wish I had the cojones to take such a leap of faith with all that color.
Your pink fridge is amazing - did you paint it or buy it that way?
What a GREAT PLACE! I wouldn't have the nerve to do it myself, but you sure did, and you did it well.
Adore it! Fantastic colors and atmosphere! And, did anyone else notice the repeating giraffes going from living room to kitchen?
WOW!LOVE!
I love your Kitchen! Can I steal your pink fridge and Mixmaster for my retro kitchen? Where on earth did you get a pink fridge?????
:)
OH MY GOSH! This house makes me SOOOO HAPPY!!!!! :D I want to be in it! I feel so happy now, like someone just handed me a huuuuuuuuuge bowl full of candy!
Love it. Love it. Love it. ;)
Love it! It is the anti-depressant house! I would never think of using so much color (and I use quite a bit) but this totally works. You are very freakin creative - especially with the kitchen floors! I see myself and many others thinking of ways to steal some of your ideas!
you have to win. or else, be in the top three! i mean, come on! no other home is coming to mind which even comes close to your joy and skill.
Can you please tell us about the pink fridge- whether you painted it, how you got that look. Please advise. Thanks!
I second the pink fridge comment - please let us know how you accomplished such a delicious color! Gorgeous house... gorgeous.
contest over. this is awesome. the perfect example of going for it when it comes to color.
so wonderful!
This is so fun. Like a magical childhood land but for adults. Plus pink is my favorite color.
Love it.
Love the pink fridge and all the wonderful colors. You did an amazing job! Definitely a contender in this contest!
it's pretty fearless, which is awesome. but what i like more is that it seems fun and carefree, though it was probably very calculated.
I don't know if i could live there, but as someone else said, i'd love to be a weekend guest! You're probably one fun lady!
I feel like pee wee herman (and I mean that in a good way!)
There are so many ways this could go wrong, but it somehow pulls together in an incredible way! What a performance!
Love it!
These photos made me smile. Great place! Love that kitchen floor.
I'm not normally a pink fan, but wow, it really works here and I love this home! It's amazing.
You have a wonderful sense of colour and really know how to match the right shades together in the right balance. This home is pure joy.
I think this is a home Betsey Johnson would adore.
Use of bright, poppy colors is completely fearless and shows a wonderful sense of whimsy. Great entry!
Say what you will about the colors (not my taste, but very cheery)...this is impeccably executed. I can't even imagine how many rolls of blue masking tape went into painting this home!
i think we have a winner! seriously, i hope they don't show my apartment now because your place is going to CRUSH it.
well done.
This is just too much. The whole house looks like a little kid's room.
love love love it!
Christine--you are a genius.
Even just looking at your pics makes me happy...I can just imagine what it must feel like to live in your wonderful home.
The winner!!!!
Not my taste at all. I can not imagine this being a full time home - i look for more serene color combinations, but reading the post it seems it might only be a vacation residence? if so then i think its delightful. the amount of painstaking labor that must have gone into creating the space just blows my mind. a good certainly well done even if the colors are not for me!
i am truly stunned by this. i would have thought this could only be created on a movie set by an army of 50 or more. as SFview said, "impeccably executed" for sure. PLEASE would you share your tips on painting a room? i love all your color choices too.
wow!
Precious! I would love to see more pictures.
The use of color here lacks judiciousness and sophistication. It hearkens a child's reasoning with respect to food: "sugar is sweet, so all we should eat is sugar." A much more clever use of color is Christian LaCroix's own apartment in Paris. Vogue did a spread on it several years back, and while bold color and whimsy were rampant, there was enough restraint to engage the viewer rather than overwhelm. If this entry is judged by interior decorators who know anything at all, it will not win because it lacks this key quality.
Absolutely love Christine's cottage. This is what I've always wanted to do to my home. Now my home is lost do to a fire and I may never get the chance again.
I do not agree with quark's remarks about restraint and clarity--that's for people scared to just do it! And with such good reason for doing it should be enough. Instead of just painting the floor one color, 2 colors and wax were used. Very, very nice.
I just need to know one thing....what/how did you do the refrigerator!
Not exactly my thing either but charming. In regards to quark's comment, the majority of the interior decorators I've worked with are still pushing taupe. Judging by the responses, judicious or not, there's a lot of people who'd like more sugar.
this house looks like it's just perfect for someone who loves sensory overload... which it perfect if from child who is the product of the 80's.
Heritage Woodworks: Note in my comment that I cited an example of a Paris apartment FULL OF COLOR. I never advocated a neutrals-only palette. "More sugar" is not the same as "sugar all the time."
that is a lot of color, but it totally works...what a fun place to live! how did you paint the fridge pink? thanks!
I love your whole house-- but especially your kitchen. And that fridge just makes me smile.
I love your place. Wonderful choice of colors. Good for you! What a fun place to live!!!!
Wow, I'm surprised how well this works! It really looks fantastic!
And I love your idea for the kitchen floor.
The only word for this house is--SWEET!!!!
I am loving the pink with the white trim. I am loving the whole house. I want framed pictures of your house on MY house's walls! I MUST KNOW--is the fridge pink to start with, or did you make it pink, and how?
Your house is even prettier and cooler than I imagined. We really need to come visit!!!!!
Good luck!
very good
it's not my style, but i think harmonious and coherent
I love it! Such a great use of color in just the right combinations. Planned and executed terrifically. Just the right touch to make it bold and beautiful. Very few people could have worked with this much color and done it so well. The color, furniture, and accents present a harmonious, happy home. Way to go!
I LOVE this place. It reminds me of Jamaica Mon! Great use of colors and decor.
I adore the colors! So bright, bold, and cheerful! that must have taken you a lot of work. It takes guts to do something in so many different colors and I think it looks awesome!
It's all the colors. While I might not want to live there, it's very cute and well done. Certainly in the top 5.
Responding to Quark's comments: who's to say that the communication of judiciousness and sophistication was Christine's aesthetic desire? What if it was exuberance and joy? Furthermore are judiciousness and sophistication the highest qualities in design? If so, are cultures that inhabit the Carribean Islands or Mexico or India totally missing the mark (due to a palette that resembles Christine's?)
In art as in so many things, I say, diversity it a good thing.
W. O. W. - that was my first thought. My second thought was a slower response as I flipped through the photos: "my god...somehow... inexplicably, all of these colors work. They are harmonious, balanced in tone and value and saturation, and sophisticated in a very subtle way. Quark is totally off the mark with his/her comment.
Even if it isn't 'your thing' this is not just sugar. This is a carefully crafted expression of Christine's vision. I just hope AT's judges are as fearless as she was.
I hate pink, but still I want this house! Great work - the kitchen floor is especially cool.
I could not live in this home but i have to agree that it works (don't ask me how).
If I lived in that beautiful, colourful, inviting house, I'd never have a negative day - EVER! It has inspired me to re-do my apartment which I have neglected for so long! Fab job, love love love it!!!!!
I have been having "vision" problems with my own bedroom, but that beautiful blue just inspired me.
This house looks so loved and happy.
Beautifully done. One of the warmest homes I've ever seen.
Cute cartoon house! No orange though???
This could have easily been a disaster (multi-colored kitchen cabinets) but you have pulled it off marvelously! Everywhere I look there is something interesting that makes me smile
I like how the pink accents in the kitchen (fridge, bread box, mixer, foot stool) tie the kitchen into the living room. While at first look the colors are quite bright, they seem to tie the rooms together. There was definite thought and consideration behind the color palette.
I agree with elliebets's comment, perhaps what Christine wanted to convey was vibrance and life, not sophistication. And like Modfan, I hope that the judges are as bold as Christine was with her color choices.
What a great and cheerful living area. I loved how the colors really tied the different rooms and fixtures together. It appears you put a lot of effort and thought into the color of each item you bring into your cottage. Good luck...if I was the judge you would have it, hands down!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE how you've decorated this space, very original! There is so much energy and playfulness in your decor. BRAVO!
Wow. No words. I just love it. What a bold, wonderful use of color. Makes me incredibly happy!
the kitchen is really original.
Lovely!!!
So awesome, original, fresh and bright! It all blends together
Planning the long awaited trip....how can we NOT visit now...its like Belize meets alice in wonderland....does E get to sleep at all.....love it!
definitely color fabulous as far as designer eye goes, not so much
One day you'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me!!!!!
A bit much for my taste. The wall is too Pepto pink for me.
A REAL sense of color and how it works. Notice the majority of walls and items are in the same value range thus nothing is too overpowering. How fabulous it all is!!!!! Congrats to the future winner!!!
Catherine
Wow, thanks to everyone for all the kind comments. I know my house is very unique, but I never imagined that so many other people would appreciate my wild color schemes. And yes, I am very fortunate to have a husband who lets me go crazy with color! Several people have commented on my pink fridge. I painted it 3 years ago and it has held up very well- no scratches or discoloration. I am loving it! It is a standard fridge that I first lightly sanded, then sprayed on a good quality oil based primer. I have a cheap spray gun that I got at Home Depot, nothing fancy but it did the job. I then lightly sanded again between coats and sprayed 2 coats of good oil based paint. I used Fine Paints of Europe. Kind of pricey, but I didn't need a lot and it has held up very well. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and well worth the effort! Thanks again for all the support.
WOW! Never would have thought this much color would work, but boy does it ever!! What a wonderful, happy home. I especially love how you used baskets (real and pictures of) to bring the rooms together.
Where did you find the blue Chandelier? It so works!
You not only should win, you should be a professional designer. Great job!
This looks great. It works because Christine went all out with color everywhere!
I think a couple years ago I would have been all about this asthetic. Now, my taste has changed. I think its actually more challenging (and unexpected) to pick subtle colors and make them look outstanding.
The other day I was at Lowes looking at paint swatches. A lot of the colors seemed ordinary, and I would have overlooked them. But then I leafed through those booklets that show sample rooms. The same colors I thought were boring, looked outstanding with the right coordinating accents.
So, for what its worth. I like this home, but it wouldn't be my top choice for the colors contest.
I think the amount of comments from people who have very different tastes but enjoy and appreciate this house really show how well done it is.
When I have a place that allows me to go color crazy I hope that I can do it in such a smart, coordinated way too!
love, love, love the kitchen.
This ought to win, or at least be in the top group.
If the contest goes to a beige interior with an accent wall and a couple of throw pillows ("pops of color")...
Wow. Not exactly my taste but I was impressed with all your choices and how cohesive it is overall. The kitchen cabinets are a bit too much for me too, but man that kitchen would put a smile on any morning face.
This is so cool! I love all of the bright colors and interesting details. It is such an inspirational home!
I love the use of color - it's like a crayon box exploded but in a good way.
The pink fridge reminds me of my little girl pink play kitchen that had turquoise faucets, pink cabinets, and a pink refrigerator.
I just love it.It is so happy and clever.
looks like it came right out of a magazine.
good for you.
enjoy
good luck
Gillian
Barbie's Dream House...I love it!
wow....this is what a color contest should look like!!!!
on a small budget, small house, not a character home: you've created a tiny piece of happiness. brilliant. perfect. kudos to you
Wow...I think I have to find a new blog....everyone loves this?? I think it's terribly gaudy...
Well, it's definitely over the top and too much going on for me, plus too much pink but it's creative and it's clear how much work and love went into it. Good job reflecting who you are. Not for me but I can appreciate it.
Absolutely stunning. Great job!
Stunning indeed. I don't think I can produce enough insulin to control the sugar rush.
This house makes me happy! So thoughtful, bright, and creative!
Beautiful job friend! Come help me!!!!! It is amazing. Love it! The Barthels
Christine, there is nobody that can say there entry is MORE colorful than yours. Good luck. Kim
I love this. I'm so amazed that Pink was used in a way that isn't overwhelming to the eye. The colors flow together so well and it cheers me up just looking at the pictures!
WOW,WOW,WOW, I LOVE IT ALL.
Yes! You are amazing Christine. So utterly creative it just oozes from your pores. So proud to have my painting on your wall. If you don't win it will be a shock! Love you. Good luck. Ali
Clear, clear winner. This looks professionally designed. Its gutsy, cheerful and just so WELL done. Applause!! Bravo!
Christine, terrific work!
I'm gonna DO IT! I'm gonna do the PINK WALL.... I have the yellows and the blues and minty greens and a day-glo orange door....
this is epic-impeccable
straight to the top of the class darlin'
(which you should be teaching)
Christine.....ya....this is the winning vote ......the connection of color and culture is evident and pleasing. Best of luck in the next round.
It's a LOT of colors, and yet it really all works together. This looks like the home of a person who has decided that their idea of escape is to live in a very vibrant, colorful world, and they had a very specific point of view and stuck with it.
No, I don't gravitate to colors this saturated, but I DO gravitate to cohesiveness and this really has it. The "budget" thing she refers to here hardly registers on my radar screen, because it fits so well that it really does NOT look cheap.
I love several of the more austere ones, too, but I seriously would enjoy the hell out of a weekend here.
There is no black -or gray- in this whole house. (with the exception of he background on the needlepoint) I think that's why all the whole thing seems so cheerful and summery. I love it.
I vote yes on this place, too. In addition to what other people mentioned, the color combinations of the pillows on the bed are really great.
Tell me -- did the refrigerator come pink, or did you paint it pink? If you painted it pink, in another post tell me how you did it. I would worry about peeling, etc. By the way, great way to cope with cupboards when you don't have the money to change them. You've definitely avoided the cookie-cutter look of a lot of kitchens which take matching cabinets as a granted at the outset.
I saw that you did post earlier on how you painted the fridge. You're too modest about it not being all that much work. It sounds like a lot of work, but you had excellent results!
THIS HOUSE IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE ONE IN THE CONTEST, I HOPE YOU WIN! I WILL KEEP VOTING FOR YOU!
This is an incredibly imaginative and brave use of color. Wonderful!
I was planning a very sedate color color scheme for my bedroom before I saw this. I feel so inspired now to go brighter!
I have such a crush on this house! What a wonderful world.
I vote for this house AGAIN! Its just SO well done and cheerful! I do not think its over the top. Please just declare her the winner and be finished.
This is exactly what this contest is about! Is is done tastefully while utilizing a broad color palate. All the details really make the house. Everything in the house is in a perfect spot!
This house should win the contest. I can't believe round 3 result. The other house has no design, just a bunch of vignettes consisting mostly of Ikea stuff. Christine, your house is fantastic. I can tell you put a lot of thoughts in to it. Very well done.
I agree...this house should have won the contest. It was the only one left that actually had color. Your house rocks.
This voting/judging system is messed up.
Something has got to be wrong! I cannot believe you did not win in the last round! Ridiculous and you lost be a few votes. There is NO WAY the other entry should have won over you. You should have won the whole thing.
Catherine
and someone suggested in comments on another entry that someone out there has concentrated voting going on for the lesser of the two matchups so give whoever gthat person is an easier chance of winning. Really, I am not paying attention to this contest again, just my two cents. This entry was by far sooo outstanding
I agree...this house should have won the contest. It was the only one left that actually had color. - wisconsin kate
the only one with color?
what is that supposed to mean?
Colors that aren't bright or loud are still colors.
If this house is out of the running I'm done watching the contest. How many times have we seen unique, creative, well executed, non-status quo designs fall to the wayside because AT insists on making this a popularity contest, not a design contest.
Know what else is popular? Toyota Corollas. They're also BORING as hell. Reduce a design contest to the lowest common demoninator and that's exactly what you'll get.
I agree that this should have gone on to round 3. It was ahead by 44 votes around 11 PM. By 11:30 it was behind by 5.
And the beautiful house with the aboriginal art and blue bathtub also lost in Round 2. I think this contest is more about how many people you can get to vote, than it is about color and style.
I don't think I'll follow the contest next year.
Christine, you should have kicked their Warm Welcoming Ikea butts.
I'm so disappointed that Christine's AMAZING place didn't move to the next round! This house is gutsy and AT is not. Don't let this stop you from doing more great decorating Christine!
I just saw this place and OH MY GOD IT'S AWESOME!!!
I think I've found my color soulmate. I'm so glad to see someone use so much color and be so unafraid of it. How refreshing.
I do like the cottage very much!
i too think the kitchen cabinets are a bit much for me, i like to cook in a white kitchen.
the whole cottage is warm and cozy!
