We’ve covered our favorite ceiling fans pretty extensively over the years, but when I stumbled on a video of the previously featured Fanaway retractable ceiling fan in action, I thought it demanded a second look. Prepare to be mesmerized after the jump.
Many designers deplore ceiling fans, declaring them aesthetic abominations. But being born and raised in Florida I, along with a number of other sun-drenched state residents, will always appreciate the breezy circulation they provide on those oh-so-hot days. A perfect compromise for those who prefer minimal décor and those who need to stay cool, the Fanaway keeps a low-profile with its blades that stealthily retract to look like a minimal light fixture. Retailing at about $350, the Fanaway will most certainly make the top of our list of Best Ceiling Fans for 2011.

Nomade Express Slee...
The problem with this fan is the awful light attached to it.
The only way that the fan's blades being retractable would be useful is if it retracts INTO a beautiful fixture. This does not, so for me, it kind of misses the point.
Anyone know who makes the chair?
When it retracts into the fixture, it just looks like an ugly, oversized fixture hanging by a pole from the ceiling. I didn't know ceiling fans were the bane of so many designers' existence? I am shopping for a new ceiling fan now and there are like thousands of models and styles on the market ... surely a designer could find one that suits any particular look without having to resort to retractable blades?
It's a start.
I never really understood the design hate for a ceiling fan and the "solutions" that sometimes worse than the offense. In the case of the pictured room, a traditional fan without the light kit would look so much better than that thing. Although I can see where this type of fan would be good in the right room or with a better looking light.
Really? Apartment Therapy you have never steered me wrong bu this fan is actually horrendous in person! Its functions weird and the light on it looks cheesy....Please no one make this terrible decor mistake!
I'm not a fan.
I agree w/Wuffy Crown. This one looks cheap and cheesy as a fan and even worse as a light. There are some really cool modern fans available for nearly the same price.
lol @ bepsf
I'm with YoNella - who makes the chair?
I just think of the dust. Seems as if a speck or two would ruin the whole effect and I have to clean my wood bladed fugly fan too often as it is.
Bahahahahah @ bepsf
