Dear AT,
So I'm tempted by this pretty sofa/bed from Urban Outfitters.
However, it's only available online, and I'm reluctant to buy something so significant without being able to sit/lay on it first.
Does anyone have any experience with this or other sofas ordered online from Urban Outfitters?
Are they comfy? Well made?
Thanks! Eve

Sheex Bedding
if you're getting it at urban outfitters, it's not significant...
sigh. i REALLY wanted this sofa in gray. it would be perfect in my new space. the UO in harvard square (cambridge, ma) had it in the store... the color was great (though it was stained quite a bit from being in the middle of the store... you know how that goes).
i sat on it and was really disappointed. the seat was comfy, from being sat on 50000000000000034919283790 times a day. that much breaking down would probably take years in your home. unless you let all the neighbors come lounge on it all day and night. and the upright portion for your back was hard as a damn rock.
rudeboy... not every has a couple grand to drop on a sofa.
I almost bought this couch. I saw it online and thought it was simple and cool and stylish and cheap, But I went to check it out in the store and it just didn't look that great. Even before I sat on it I was like, eh. The fabric looked slouchy in places, it looked kinda cheap and dorm room-ish. I didn't see it holding up that well. When I sat on it, it was pretty uncomfortable and hard.
If you can't sit on it to get a real feel for it, I wouldn't buy it.
I've sat on a couple UO sofas in the store and they generally seemed sturdy and well made for the price. They are also reasonably comfortable. However, I agree with the previous comment about the fabric. I didn't see this cream color, but the grey (almost all of their furniture fabrics in fact) looked really synthetic... It just had that weird sort of sheen that a cheap itchy sweater would have. Hard to describe but you probably know what I mean. It looks like they really cheap out on the fabric choices although the designs are nice enough.
i forgot that part! it was VERY itchy!
thank you all!! i will definitely check out other options instead.. hope you all ended up finding a couch that worked for you! e.
Try looking at Dania much better quality.
This sofa at macys is pretty similar: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=251414&CategoryID=35389&LinkType=EverGreen
it comes in a bunch of colors and it's on sale for $699
Gosh...I feel like this has been asked and answered on AT before...
any word on how good the macy's sofa is? i could soooo go for that in my new place!
my wife and i put the antoinette fainting sofa in apple green on our wedding registry. a few of the women i worked with at the time all pitched in and bought it for us, which was extremely exciting... until we got it home and opened the box. the fabric is literally velcro'd to the back of the couch. i wouldn't trust urban outfitters furniture as far as i could throw it and would advise against purchasing any. at least with ikea furniture the price matches the quality and durability of the piece.
My in-store experiences with furniture from UO have been almost entirely very, very bad.
I purchased the grey either/or sofa for my place and for the price (got the floor model for super cheap - only one in the Toronto store) it's pretty decent and looks great. Yeah, it's a little hard but I like that and the bed option is clutch for musician friends who need to crash while rolling through on tour. Once I move in with the fiancee we'll be looking at something that's higher quality but for now I love it.
Also check out Crate and Barrel. This sofa is very similar to Petrie or Rochelle. The stock colors in both are very nice and both couches are pretty comfy.
By the way, I'm a big fan on UO. I like their clothes and small home accessories, but even I will skip on the furniture and some larger accessorie due to issues with quality.
Ok, I'll admit I love UO. The bedspreads are a great way to get a lot of interesting fabric for pretty cheap (watch for sales). They have fun and not too expensive throw pillows, some neat rugs and lots of weird and fun ceramics stuff. But other than a dish chair and maybe those mini pedestal tables, even I wouldn't buy furniture there. And I'm not a furniture snob; my sofa is from target, my end tables are Ikea and my chair is a thrift-store find with a DIY reupholstery job.
jenzoe - it has.

I bought a couch once from UO. The upside: they let you return it for a 100% refund, and will actually come to your place to pick it up. The downside: you lose your original shipping cost, which is upward of 100$.
My experience is much the same as many others who have posted -- the fabric is cheap, the construction is more like a futon than a couch. Try CB2, or the couches for under 900 at Room & Board.
my old roommate bought a couch from UO.
it was stylish, comfy and CHEAP. she still has it and it still looks fine.
also of note. UO and Anthropologie are the same company and thus all of their furniture is made in the same factory. So for those who pshaw urban but love anthropologie, well, suck it up, because you're just paying a crapload more for the same exact quality.
one thing of note: all of their couches that I've seen are covered in a nubby fabric that cats just LOVE to scratch.
Shilojean, do you know for a fact that UO and Anthropologie has the same upholstery vendors or are you making an educated guess?
well, they did when i worked for them in the late 90's.
I know a designer there, I'll ask her if the situation has changed.
closertotheocean.....I own the Corona Sofa from Macy's, and I love it! Its very comfortable and well made. If you don't have the $$$ to throw down now, I'd recommend that sofa for now, its a great piece.
Yes, the Corona Sofa is a very nice couch. I'd wait when they have a sale (it's usually about $600 on sale), which is often before ordering though so you don't pay the full price ($899).
I have had VERY good luck ordering online for my clients' condos from a company called Simplicity Sofas. http://www.simplicitysofas.com
They have traditional, transitional and contemporary styles from full size sofas to apartment size sofas, loveseats, chairs and storage ottomans. And they have over 50 fabrics to choose from. They also have a 20" air sleep system (sleeper sofa) option that is incredible.
