I've just purchased this black vinyl sofa for $30.
From the pictures (from the previous owner's home) it looked so sleek, but really two of the cushions have huge gashes in the vinyl.
I was wondering if anyone has tried using vinyl repair kits, and whether they really work like it does on TV?...

If not I was probably going to try having them reupholstered, but I can't decided whether to do it in vinyl or fabric (maybe velvet) and which color to use.
If you could help me, I would so appreciate it.

Same question... I was remiss in cutting my dog's nails, and in revenge she poked a hole in my vinyl couch.
If those cushions come off, you can take them to a place that does auto or boat upholstery to be repaired. My shoe and luggage repair guy will also sometimes make this type of repair (when he is in a good mood!)
I'd reupholster - that piece has great lines and would look super in a solid linen or cotton woven fabric.
This is just my gut speaking, but I expect the "As-seen-on-TV!" patch kits would be crap. The color matching process would be pretty hard, even if you could get the texture right.
But I bet a pro could do an impressive job.
If the cushions are removable that would be a good middle of the road fix to have them done by a boat/auto upholstery shop.
Otherwise, ditto on linen.
Hi it's my sofa. Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking either going with the linen (what color? natural?) or taking it to be reupholster because the cushions do come off. How much do you think each cushion would run at the auto repair shop? Thanks
i think you should AT LEAST TRY some vinyl repair kit tests. You could probably get some free samples of vinyl from an upholstery place and then put a gash in it and test a kit out. I cant imagine that the fix would be too unsightly, especially since you are matching the color black. You probably wont even have to mix a color! Try it out befor you go for expensive reupholstery... thats all im sayin.
Victoria in DC- if you do choose to reupholster in linen, make sure that your material is 100% cotton linen. Any manmade fiber, even if it only makes up a small % of the material will grab hold of stains.
ohmy, that is a lovely couch. yeah. try options 1 and 2 first (or at least price them out). then option 3 is reupholstering, which will run, my guess, at least $1500 for materials and labor. but think how lovely it would be in a charcoal wool tweed, or something equally businessy. Mmmm.
