Small Cool Judges: Craig Olson

3-21--craig-olson.jpgName: Craig Olson
Location: Portland, Oregon
Size of Home: 2500 sq ft

What would you like to see in this contest?

"The most creative design work often comes from situations where there are limitations instead of unlimited resources. Some of the best interiors I have seen are from places such as urban Japan where space is at a premium. Id like to see intelligent and creative solutions to small space living, but I am also interested in highly personal interiors that are somewhat over the top"

Bio: Craig is the Area Manager for Design Within Reachs Northwest and Midwest regions. A longtime employee of the company, Craig previously worked as a Merchandise Buyer for DWR in San Francisco, coming to the company from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Museum Store where he also was responsible for merchandise buying duties.

Craig holds an MFA in Product Design from University of Illinois. Craig has been involved in the design communities of Chicago, San Francisco, and Portland (OR), where he now resides in a late 60s modern home he is restoring.

Craig would also like to give props to Sean Igos shop called CANOE in downtown Portland: www.canoeonline.net.

Is that a studfinder in your pocket, p(too), or are you just really glad to see him?

"Which answer gets me the audition?"

I KNEW IT! I knew P2 would be all over this one.

If Patrick moves to Oregon now I got dibs on his apartment.

Joey--
You're welcome in my apartment anytime. ;)

And regarding Mister Olson, there is a "I wish he were judging MY unit" joke here, but *I* am not going to make it. Wait...

And here I thought p(too) would comment about things that are "highly personal" yet "over the top."

"judging MY unit..." hee!

But Mr. Olson reminded me, I wish there was a smallest, coolest for Japan. They would wipe the floor with us.

"They would wipe the floor with us."

...using some sort of completly green cleanser and a renewable resource mop that doubles as a coatrack with a funky hair-do called "Happy Floor"

I will be visiting Japan in May for the first time. I can't WAIT.

Glad to see a judge from Portland! Hi Craig! And happy to give more props to Sean Igo and his new store Canoe! I love that shop!

Are you kidding? If Patrick moves to Oregon, he can swap spaces with me!

Wait - I haven't actually seen his apartment...

I'm really just chiming in on the Portland connection. I love this town.

Rob -
For P2's pad, have look at last year's Smallest, Coolest contest, and look for Patrick's Cosmo Urban Rental or maybe look for something that refers to the WINNER.

You missed this fun fact about Craig : his home is larger than the combined square footage of (at least) four of the 'smallest, coolest' entries.

Well if he was formerly a buyer at SFMoMA Museum Store, he definitely knows his stuff. Their well-edited merch selection puts the store among the top of my personal Top 10 list of West Coast retail "destinations."

"...using some sort of completly green cleanser and a renewable resource mop that doubles as a coatrack with a funky hair-do called "Happy Floor""

actually, i think the *correct* name of that product is "happy my city pretty girl floor"

Ptoo,

Again, I see two signs that he'd be happy to judge your unit: the MFA in design, and the periwinkle sweater.

posted by Mia on 2006-03-21 21:08:18

You can't judge a boy by his cableknit.
I've been fooled by periwinkle before.
;)

Just stumbled onto this judge comments, and they're lovely and funny. Thank you, ptoo, for turning my Monday frown upside down. How are you the first to post? That can't be easy to do. Are you the sort of person who is among the first to arrive at a party?

Hi, Craig, you handsome extraction of...German? genes. Craig looks like a an ex-co-worker on whom I had a pseudo-crush (his girlfriend worked here too and never let him out of her sight). Helllooo, Craig. *dainty wave*

P2, I automatically assume everyone's gay or married. And for awhile there, it was both gay and married here in S.F. . It makes my life sooo much easier. No ridiculous lusting after the people around me, but lots of good-natured flirting.

I save the ridiculous lusting for book characters that I can alter to suit my whims, combining, say, bits of Jack Boudreaux, Conroy Cooper and Stephen Danjermond from a Tami Hoag book.

Here's hoping for the Insta-Clone machine that allows me to create my own heart-throb.
