Apartment #21: Kim & Eric's Little Ship

Copy of 06-living-and-bed.jpg

Name: Kim & Eric
Location: East Village
Size: 300 sq ft
Type: Studio

The Pitch:

We've been here 8 years. It's like a little ship. Our home is based on
good use of storage and multi-purpose surfaces. It's one long room with
no 'real' bathroom and a closet that used to be a twin mattress loft
until we raised it for storage and a built a proper closet underneath.

Copy of 02-in-and-look-back.jpg

We are lucky to have nice light and cross breezes with our five little
windows - none of which faces the street. Once we had 30 guests; no
shoes allowed. Twister anyone? Kim & Alec

Love the orange walls.

The windows are great, and the colors are fun. It seems like a very homey place that probably looks better in person than in the pictures. I prefer that beds not seem so much like beds in studio apartments; i.e., daybed, Murphy Bed, etc. If I were to move right in to that space with everything as-is, I'd be tempted to go buy a huge rectangle of foam from the place on Canal Street that sells them, and angle two of the side to match the angle of the sofa, and upholster the resulting monolithic item in a fabric to match the actual sofa, and make a bedspread of the same fabric, so the bed looked KIND of like an inverted conversation pit.

I think the rope on the pipe is a pretty attractive way to keep from burning yourself on them, but it makes me want to see baskets near it. I've been accused of liking things pretty relentlessly matchy, so consider the source.

The closet space looks pretty enormous so that's quite a coup. And there's something romantic about the tiny 50's dinette table with and it's chairs.

Cute! I love the colors. I've also given up on my non-functional "bedroom" and turned it into a huge closet. It wouldn't be the East Village without a tub [shower] in the kitchen...

Oh god, I actually lived in an east village apartment that was almost identical to this one--shower in the kitchen, separate toilet, white-painted brick wall. Yours is a far lovelier version of that same set up. I love the orange walls, the penny-covered end table, the rope-disguised pipe, and the fact that you've showered in your kitchen for eight years. Congratulations.

This apartment reminds me of my favorite Cuban restaurant... the wall colors, dinette set, etc. Very fresh and fun. The closet you created is a smart choice. I totally missed the shower in the kitchen the first three times I viewed the slideshow. As said above, kudos to you for finding a great way to live with it.

Eight years! wow.
Like the color, the closet, the fact that it actually looks like a couple could live there.

Orange wall! Love the orange wall, and yours looks great in context of the space. The copper-penny mosaic is fun, too. [MGR--There seem to be lot of folks rocking the orange wall these days. Since it isn't the easiest color to work with, don't you think it would be fun to see how various AT readers have put their personal stamp on "the orange wall"? If you solicited photos, I'd gladly send mine over--mostly because I'd like to see how others have worked it.]

Go Team Orange.
I like the desk, and the tiny cafe table, and the fact that it looks like people really live here.

Is orange the new black?
(not a fan of black when it was black)

The penny end table seems nice.

The only thing that concerns me is the rope.
How long has it been there? It seems like a potential fire hazard...but then again I'm a bit overly cautious.

While I like the use of color and a few of the pieces, the layout doesn't work for me and it feels cluttered. I'm not sure of the design logic here.

I f'ing love the sissel on the pipe. My kitties will thank you if I ever get around to copying you! The apartment is inspiring for the complete attention to organization and storage more than design, but that's great by me.

Great chance to visit my son's apartment without the plane fare and the climb! Pull out the secret day bed, I'll be there soon.
Is that recycled saffron on the pillows?

totally gorgeous space. very impressed with how much love and attention you can put into a studio. wish I could do the same with mine! it's clear how much you love your space and each other

What a little jewel box! Everything has its' place and considering how much stuff is in there it doens't feel too cluttered to me. I prefer that tv's aren't so visible in small spaces. If the tv were concealed in a small cabinet, that would be more attractive.

momi -- the rope covering the heating pipes never gets hot enough to combust.

Considering the limited space I think you did a great job. The rope on the pipe is a great idea. I'm sure your fanny appreciates it.

Great job on the closet, the bookcases and the color on the wall!! It also shows a lot of personality. It's a place that speaks for it self. SUPER COOL!

I like this apartment a lot. I like the choice of colors. How did you do the ropes on the pipes? I have several ugly pipes in my place and I have two giant cats who might be persuaded to scratch rope covered pipes instead of my couch. How hot do they get?

I'm impressed with the warm and inviting feel of such a small space. I loved seeing the photos on the refrigerator! You get my vote.

It is not my intension to be mean, but why live in New York, and have an apartment that looks like it could be the interior of a double wide in Arkansas? Being homey is one thing, but it is just a cluttered mess.

"Why live in New York, and have an apartment that looks like it could be the interior of a double wide in Arkansas?"

Well, 1) renting a studio in NYC costs around what a two-story house in Arkansas would and b) it's in New York City. Most people who live in these tiny houses leave the house a lot more than suburbanites, and we have more interesting things going on outside...

Yo! This was my favorite apartment, even before I had to vote on it. They missed a photo of one of the most creative shelving I've ever seen. Above the doorway between the studio area and the kitchen area, about 8 feet up, is a very long shelf with brackets above the shelf instead of underneath...so they are hidden with the books all around them. They still won't give their secret away! Oh, and ask to see the "man shelf."

You have 300 square feet. That is a fine amount for a couple since most of your space is usable. You don't have any bad unusable entryway hallway. I suggest breaking down that storage loft in order to create more of an open feeling. You don't have many photos that give an idea of what that section of the apt looks like-just a closet close up. I would break it and then just add vertical storage-like a big armoire-closet thing to ceiling in part of the space, but not as big as current underneath and overhead storage and cover it with doors, or light sliding doors. DOn't use dark colors. Keep light and airy.

Also, replace some of small knick knacky furniture of have 'openness' feeling in those spots, and just place those items in fewer larger storage pieces.

How about turning bed so it is perpendicular to where it is now? maybe leave space near window? Can't remember if yo have headboard-but a nice firm platform bed with headboard and two big firm pillows would be nice.

cool colors on walls, nice small kitchen, hoping you don't cook much.

i used to have tub in my kitchen, 325 sqare foot tenement, i know the deal.

now have 325 ft studio, but 1/3 is kitchen, i hate a big kitchen though.

posted by t on 2005-11-22 14:00:53

also, try moving small bookcase furniture out of bedroom/toilet door area. this way have more room for just bed. also, try to move penny table, although it is nice, out of living room area, and push couch further down to fridge. i know it is only one foot farther from bed. but, this may give bedroom a little more room, and push living room further out, so you have more space there. try to move tv and desk furniture in a less busy way, so living room can seem a little warmer and more conversational, with fewer storage tables.

store more things in back closet area, so you have more of an open zen like feeling in living room bedroom area.

maybe clean up kitchen knick knack y stuff a little so it incorporates a little more with living room.
