apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Apartment #29: David & Alex's Down the rabbit hole....... and don't forget DRINK ME POTION

Copy of DSC02902.jpg

Name: David and Alex
Location: Lower East Side
Size: 193 square feet including Bathroom
Type: Studio

The Pitch:

In less than 200 square feet I have managed to pack all the comforts of a big apartment with my own hands. The main issue was storage, obviously, so I built some window seats that also served as storage for tools, vacuum, computer and files. The day bed also serves as storage and slides so I can pull out the Murphy bed.

I put an island in the kitchen to separate the room and have a working counter and bar. And the only time I think my place is small is when my friends visit and tell me so. You'll find two people living here (and no wire hangers!)

First of all, how in the world would one thing 2 people could live in such a small space?

I must commend you on your excellent utilization of space without sacrificing a sense of style.

It must be very clausterphobic, but I applaud you.

Although the colors aren't my style, you got an extra point for packing two people into what I believe is the smallest apartment yet... and it doesn't look that cramped. Kudos!

Good use of space and very ingenious. Love the window seat idea but not sure about that fabric.

However, the colors are just not doing it for me...maybe there is just too many different colors in such a small space?

Or maybe the colors come across better in person?

Not sure.

I just have to give you kudos for managing to live in that size space with 2 people and it looks cool! The window seat storage is a great idea. I don't think I'd have picked the pink wall and blue murphy bed doors, but its a cool space. And I liked how you carried over the fabric to the kitchen.

I am beyond impressed. Love the window seat idea. I might have to steal it!

You guys got one of my very few "super-cool" votes for this contest. (I think only 2 others ranked that high with me.) I really love this place. The colors are vibrant and rich. And I love love love the Morocco moderne thang you got going. It really is a stylish take on those old-world design cues. The Moorish sconce, the textured pillows, the gray diamond fabric and the orange/red throw really work for me in the context of the color choices. It's nice to see people who aren't afraid of going balls-out on with their color palette. The fabric-covered storage benches are really clever, too. You've done quite well with your 200 square feet. Huzzah!

My ex-boyfriend and I lived in a studio with this exact layout on the Upper West Side (as you face the kitchen the bathroom is straight ahead on your right, correct?) -- we lasted all of three months and then I had to move out, LOL!

Our space looked nothing like this, what you've done is amazing and you most definitely have my vote for coolest smallest space.

How dare I worry about my clutter problem when you've ingeniously organized everything in your home. Great job!!

I'll echo the statement that the window seat was a great idea.

You definitely get extra points for the tiny factor, and I must say that I've never seen someone put so much work into such a small space.

Great work

Those window seat/storage solutions are genius! The book shelves look great too. Looking closely, I can see the brackets but, the placement and book stacking method made it look built into the wall at first.

Great idea on hiding the electronics.. (DVR unit etc)

the glass hides the electronics yet allows for the IR beam to penetrate , so while they are concealed, they are still functional. And great job hiding the wires.

Hey great job! Really good utilization of space in an impressive square footage. I thought my place was small (630 sq ft studio NOT in NY) but I'm impressed by what you've done as well as most of the other contestants.

I like it conceptually, but the execution in terms of fabric, color and other choices leave a bit to be desired. Compare this kitchen to Cedric's, for example. They're both tiny, but everything just fits better. 'Course, this is probably a rental anyway. Also, I wish it had window treatments.

I love the use of the bold colors it helps to keep the room bright and vibrant. It also seems to make the room bigger and therefore less clostrophobic. Keep away from the window treatments which would make the room appear smaller. Great ideas for storage near the windows.

I love Murphy Beds, and yours is very fun. Window seats should become sort of a default first obvious choice for anyone with windows to consider, before thinking about anything else, because of how they provide seating and storage, and in many cases, they fit neatly into little pre-existing niches.

I admire your use of bold colors; they're not quite my taste, but I think you've managed to create certain visual rules for yourselves and fleshed out your vision in a very clean, consistent way, and that is very immportant. The entire place looks as if it could be viewed through one pair of fun glasses.

Kudos for the storage solutions and your use of such vibrant colors. You've done a wonderful job of making small feel cozy, homey and fun. And for two people?! Bravo.

Wow, to think two people living in such a cool space. You can see thought was given to the space-when it came to the color, textures and lights. Mother would be so proud.

I'm loving those colors. How inspiring! The placement of the wall mounted tv & computer screen look great together, instead of detracting from the over all look which electronics usually do.

Great job! Loved the window seat as well as the Murphy bed. You certainly packed alot into a small apartment. I gave you a super cool for a job well done. Also neatness counts in my book and you have that down pat.

wow - where function and modern style fuse together marvelously - i just love it! the colors are filled with light, strength and great energy. the vibrant pink helps one to focus, as do those amazing closet doors! the immaculate kitchen looks too good to be true, and it's hard to believe any other apartment could come close to how awesome this one is!

I want to rephrase my comment to "very simple window treatments". What I think I'm reacting to is the fact that they just look like big dark glassy rectangles. Obviously they would look much different in the day.

posted by charlene on 2005-04-29 00:07:11

This is THE COOLEST use of a small space yet!

It's really hard in to make a small -and man this is small- NYC apartment feel "customized" and well designed, and this one is!

I'm loving to see some rather large furnishings (light fixture and chair) put into this micro-space; I'd rather see one or two big things, over 5-6 small items.

If if had to be critical, I'd probably go with a darker color on the window wall to offset the rest of the other walls, it would also open up that side of the apartment and wouldn't feel so tight (dark colors give the illusion of a continutation in the peripheral vision); I also hate window treatments, and commend you for avoiding them here - I LOVE IT!!

Extremely nice Job!

This is the cutest little place I have seen! I do applaud you for the organization of it. If I lived there stuff would be stacked to the ceiling! LOL

Wow! Great location! Great use of the space! You really installed most things very nicely! For example, you put in window seats with storage, but beautifully kept windows completely open and not blocked!

Great ideas:
window storage with open windows
tiny computer
tiny flat screen television
murphy bed

Some things i don't like:
kitchen island:
i'm not so fond of the kitchen island. do you like it for breaking up space? or for being functional? most east villagers don't cook much and eat at work. so i think it just closes off space and wastes room.

red day bed in the middle of the room:
if you already have a murphy bed that you pull down every night. then open up that space with small loveseat. but something that you can comforatbly sit on. how about an ikea karlanda loveseat? something like 70 inches by 30 inches. firm not squishy. not too high or too low. the current bed is too casual looking and wastes floor space. try something, smaller, firmer, a little higher, and more living room like.

grey desk chair:
too big for under the desk. try a thin small yet comfy chair with skinny legs to give room open look. if you use not just as desk chair, but to sit on, try the loveseat instead, and when a gues comes over, they sit on loveseat, you sit on chair, maybe have an extra folding chair too.

also, don't remember seeing any eating area????
