apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

200 Words from LA: Ode to a (Terra Cotta) Grecian Urn

For many of us living in Los Angeles, having vast amounts of outdoor space is hindered by the rising cost of rent. That doesn’t mean we can’t find retreat in our small patios, balconies and even mere steps or stoops.

Lots of things were done to spruce up this client’s small back “walkway”.

The bamboo screens helped to both block out the ugly building next door, as well as create a room-like atmosphere. I rubbed coffee grounds on the wall to give the yellow cement a little depth. Some old, rusted metal chairs got a quick spruce up with spray paint, and yes, those straw “puffs” are Ikea.

My partner went to town with plants based on our client’s green thumb level. HOME DEPOT has a great nursery, which may not feel as lush as other places, but the prices are great. The Sunset Nursery has a staff with great knowledge, and they deliver. (for a small fee).

Summer is soon upon us. Think of your outdoor space as an extra room. Hang out, eat under the stars, relax. And please people; terra cotta pots are so inexpensive there is no need to cheapen one’s space with plastic. Ever. Have fun! AH

I want to pick this up and transport it all to my deck in San Francisco. I love all the separate spaces and the cozy, cozy feel. Lovely!
