9 Month Cure: For The Love of Bamboo

9-22-henry3.jpg

Time Remaining: -3 days

No baby. Halfway through our kitchen installation, we have big issues with our walls and ceiling, all of which are so hopelessly out of line that it is pointless even thinking about it. Nevertheless, Anthony and Teddy continue to come upon problems and figure out solutions, even though it has meant taking all the cabinets down twice already. And that is not easy. Unlike normal cabinets, HenryBuilt's are SOLID bamboo and really, really heavy.

Which also means that we are slowly falling in love with the deep carmel color of bamboo. Hence the pics... (note: these are from lunchtime. We're still on track to finish tomorrow).

That Nacho Chees color really rules.

I love those cabinets!

The cabinets are beautiful; at least you have a contractor who seems concerned with getting the job done properly.

The bamboo is absolutely beautiful! The cabinets are so warm and buttery and combined with the nacho cheese walls, your kitchen looks delicious. Almost there!

So beautiful. I'm a little confused - where is the sink going to go? And what is going to go in the empty space next to the fridge?

I am just amazed at how well you use space. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

It looks straight from here! I also love the warmth of the bamboo cabinets with the yellow walls. You are so fortunate to have such diligent workers - everything is going to turn out fine in the end.
As for the baby, I was born 11 days late and perfectly healthy. Maybe the baby is a future foodie and understands the importance of a good kitchen. Hang in there!

This is so incredibly exciting! Waiting for a new baby and a new kitchen!

Cabinets and walls are wonderful to look at and all will be well in the end. Good luck with baby. We await the news....

Wow! Love the look of the new cabinets. Curious though about the problems with the wall and ceiling alignment. This is a common problem in a lot of older structures and probably some newer ones. Do the kitchen cabinet people not come in and measure and check for this type of issue?

Way to go - looks great.

Gorgeous! I'd swear old buildings become less square between the initial measuring and the installation. Either that, or the contractors become more level.

Baby arrival dates are educated guesses, even less firm than contractor arrival dates. Isn't it lovely that both have been obliging about the order in which they're showing up?

posted by wende in san francisco on 2006-09-22 16:38:17

also, and i'm sure the both of you have heard this before, first babies tend to be a week or so late for some reason. so you're completely normal (and lucky the little one has decided the kitchen was worth waiting for).

Matilda-There is a floorplan in the prior posts. I think the sink is in the middle of the floor cabinet, with the cooktop over the wall oven between the sink and fridge.

Those cabinets are so gorgeous that our next kitchen will definately be Henrybuilt! I am green with envy! Just love how solid they are -- none of this cheap particle stuff. I can feel my husband groaning and steeling himself for this project (if we sell our current home, watch out, henrybuilt, here we come!).

Oh, and as for the baby, put me down for September 26th (it's my daughter's birthday). I am starting to have a funny feeling of when he/she will make an appearance!

wow wow wow wow wow !!!!

I am so jealous!!! 1/2 a day and your cabs are up and so gorgeous and solid and drool-worthy

contractor and I been working 3 days straight and I only have half a kitchen, of course it's totally groovy that your cabs arrived pre-assembled

what drama, you couldn't have written it better yourself!

i guess when all the detractors where hueing and crying a month or so ago, a great excuse would've been: "but think of the dynamic drama of the arrival of kitchen, arrival of baby, installation of both and all into newly reconfigured space."

your adoring fans (us) await with bated breath, thanks for sharing

shimmed plywood nailed against wavy plaster wall does the trick, I see

My jaw actually dropped when I saw that first photo. An exquisite combination, the bamboo and the lovely walls. Also, what great lighting. Sets everything off beautifully.

I know that you are full of A-N-T-I-C-I-P-A-T-I-O-N for your baby, but I have a feeling that ONCE your baby arrives, you will be glad that he/she has stayed put for so long.

And, I love the bamboo............

I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of paying for such a costly renovation for something one rents, even if rent-controlled. as long as it makes you happy, thats what matters.

The people installing your cabinets sound fantastic. I hope you tell them that many of your readers are astounded by their professionalism, skill, and attitude. I see a beautiful bottle of wine in their future?

Really really really nice stuff Maxwell. The combination of the open shelving and the closed is excellent.

the last time i passed by grand street on a weekend i was drawn into the henry built shop. I lusted it at as I saw through the glass windows that my husband had to peel me away it looked so European - with the kind of precision that german engineers generally have with making machinery. Immaculate.$$$$$$$$$$

Those cabinets are gorgeous!! And although I think they're gorgeous, and I know cabinets are necessary, I so loved yesterday's post with the lights glowing up on the beautiful bare yellow wall... ... ... I can hardly wait until the kitchen is done, and the new miniature chef is around to enjoy it! (I'm sure that this baby is going to be a foodie.)

not to grey poupon your musturd kithen ;)
this material option may make a good choice for an above counter back splash that is beautifull and easy to clean.

Lovely cabinets. I like the wall color, but not with the cabinets; it would look better with green walls, or perhaps slate blue.

posted by Charlotte on 2006-09-22 18:54:49

As stated in the "Apartment Therapy" book, a general rule of thumb is to stick with either a warm or a cool color palette in a room. Since the bamboo brown is a warmish color, yellow is a better choice than green (a cool color unless you really up the yellow) or slate blue (definitely a cool color). Besides, kitchens are suited for warm colors.

anyone want to surmise what a small galley of these cabinets cost? about twice as many cabinets as show in the pic. 10k? 20k? 30k?

I am absolutely in love with those cabinets. I want them in my dream home! If they are really expensive, I wonder if lamination is a viable option?

posted by charlene on 2006-09-22 23:13:54

i would like a coral or peach instead of the yellow, but that's me. it's a tiny space, and if maxwell and skgr and baby are going to inhabit it happily, they gotta love it. and if they love yellow, then yellow they shall have.

my childhood bedroom as a similar shade of yellow, a bit more banana than lemon. deelish.

Looks great! Love the cabs, and the backsplash color looks lovely, too. You can also have clear, removable panes of class back there. If you had a normal stone or tile backsplash going in, the installation of the cabinets would be a LOT easier, BTW!

I'm presently remodeling my kitchen, too. All 350 sqft of it. By myself, mostly. I've taken down a wall...and pieces of another wall...and poured 750lbs of self-leveling underlayment...and laid out the underfloor heat...and moved the washing machine and other appliances...and put together the new cabinets. As soon as I get off here, I'm going to be tiling the first 100sq ft. Wonder why I'm putting it off? *g*
