AT On: Jack Kerouac, Resolutions, Squiggles, and Art In The Home

Drawing #1

We made a simple resolution on New Year's Eve, to draw a squiggle each day for a year. We've been drawing and painting them every now and then for about five years, but not enough to figure out why we are so drawn to them and where they are leading us. So we decided to step it up. We also decided that it was a really lovely way of adding artwork to our home...

In Jack Kerouac's Big Sur, he writes a poem every day and sticks it on a nail in his little cabin in the woods. It's a meditation, but it's also a daily living element in his home - sort of like fresh flowers. We wanted to do something similar with drawing and see if we could create a small spot for this daily drawing in our home that would really shine.

So far, so good.

We've been at it each day for the past seven days and it's going well. It's really really nice to do a small drawing each night after dinner and then to see it around the house the next day. And while they're not all good, they're good enough to be on view for one day.

Another part of our resolution was to share the progress of the squiggle or the Daily Drawing with readers in an attempt to inspire similar behavior over the course of the year. We also may sell them off to interested readers via Ebay and give the money to charity. We certainly don't need to keep all of them in our home when the year is done!

For the time being, however, just look out for Daily Drawing updates and wish us luck. New Year's resolutions are deceptively hard to keep and it will definitely be a test of our sanguine nature!

At the end of the year, you could have a very conceptual view of life in your house through the squiggle book, if you keep them all in one notebook, that is.

It will be interesting to look back at the squiggles at the end of the year to see how personified it's become.

Enough of the teasing!! We want to see more of the new home and most importantly, the story behind it. Then we can talk squiggles ;-).

Matilda, I suspect Maxwell will be revealing more of their new home as we go along with the squiggles. They are both works in progress.
