This is a fireplace for those who just can't stand the heat (or don't have a fireplace). The Plaza Fireplace ($3350) was designed by Conmoto and Seiger Design of Germany and "due to the fact that the open flame is produced by tins of burning gel, plaza may be placed anywhere in the home without it having to be connected to a chimney."
Just sent in by P2, it has us wondering if life really would be better if we had one of these in our small apartment - one of these and a lot of tins of burner gel. (Thanks, P2!)

I've seen fireplaces elsewhere (Spiegel?) for A LOT LESS but they apparently need a gas connection.
Fireplaces are so wierd. I don't understand the attraction. They are usually air polluting, inefficient heaters, they require cut lumber which contributes to deforestation. I know people who light them while runnning air conditioning. I just don't get them. I know. I know. "They're primal. A return to the past." etc. But firemaking came relatively late to Homo Sapiens Sapiensus. And I don't particularly want to return to the past. I guess it's yuppy TV. A grown-up "let's pretend."
(My fireplace is in the worst possible location...so I've got a personal axe to grind.)
I believe that there is a similiar one that runs on gel ameico.com that is less than half the price.
The one on ameico.com is the same exact one (Peter Maly for Conmoto) and Ameico does not sell directly from their website.
When my husband and I were first married, we lived in a lake front cottage in Connecticut. It had a beautiful stone fireplace in the little livingroom. We would pull out the sofabed on snowy nights and sleep in front of the roaring blaze, with only the cats between us and the fire. But sometime around 3:00 am reality set in. The fire burned itself out, the cats had taken off for warmer climates in the bedroom, and my husband and I argued over who would get up and brave the freezing draft to close the flue.
I have been checking out prices on the gel fireplaces. You can buy the traditional ones for about $400 but nothing as great looking as this one, especially if your place is contemporary,I agree though, the price is a bit high! Just think of all the things you can buy for $3,000!!
Here is one of the few gel fireplaces that I've seen with clean lines, and it's only $297. Most of what I've come accross are very traditional and ornate.

3 Grand is a lot for a fireplace even though it looks great. I bought a Milan Wall Hung Sunjel Fireplace and it serves the gel/ventless yet modern look. I get compliments on it all the time. I bought the copper and it is HOT!

There are many of these units starting in the range of $249.00 (that's with shipping included!) but everyone will get the one that they want.... The gel costs about $3-7.99 per can for the actual gel that is supposed to come with it and it lasts about 3 hours...not so good so far. Many of these stoves recommend 3 cans or so at a time to get any real heat out of them. (that's up to almost $24 per hour for those counting)
These burn oxygen and build up dangerous levels of CO2 without ventilation into the apartment (that lets the heat out). So why do you want one of these? Just have someone you trust smear that tingly personal oil all over you when the temp. drops and you'll be much better off...and safer too!
