Art Cool Air Conditioners

5_13_artcool2.jpgSuper Cool. If you are tired of looking at the grimy exterior of your AC unit and wonder why no one has designed more attractive option, your wait is over. We spotted this in MET Home and had to post it because it is so smart, so cool and so expensive and so confusing to understand that it bears a second look.

LG's Art Cool line of ac units (from $1,700) is a very different beast than the box we have in our windows. This one has "a slim, interior wall mounted evaporator unit and an outdoor condensing unit. Ultraquiet, the machine has an air purifier and dehumidifier" - and, of course, changeable panels. Oh, and the air blows out around the sides of the panel as well as the small slit in the front. Available from www.LGusa.com. MGR

Hope the unit has better functionality than LG's website.

I can't imagine that one of these units blows and cools efficiently, though. That's a mighty small aperture on the front, and I'm puzzled by the usefulness of air blowing out the SIDES; logically, it's not the window and wall immediately surrounding the unit that needs cooling - it's the ROOM.

I haven't seen these advertised down here in Texas; I supect it's because this particular unit is no match ofr this spiteful Texas heat. I'll grant you it's attractive yes - but (probably) not practical.

The sides and front are louvered panels which swing out to facilitate air flow. It's basically a fancier version of split systems that are standard everywhere in the world, except the US. Also, the vents are mounted close to the ceiling, which is ideal for an AC (as cold air settles). Despite it's foreign design, I'm sure it could easily hold up to your Texas heat. That's assuming the installer uses a unit with appropriate power/BTUs.

Just in time! What kind of AC would one recommend for someone looking for something...
1. Affordable, aka Cheap
2. With 2 windows in my apt - not something that will block the view
3. In a walk-up apt I rent - so nothing that requires insane installation, nor nothing too nice since I'll hate to leave it behind when I move.

I heard about ductless split systems - how much should I expect to pay, and is it a good enough value? What's the best way for me to get educated?

Wow...all this makes me wish i needed a new ac.
(one may now suffer an untimely death...muahahahahaha)

Let us all remember...ac's do not cool rooms.
they remove heat.

I noticed this winter... it is a little confussing until you figure out they are not the wall units common in the US, but wall units very popular in Europe (part of the unit is mounted outside/part of the unit is mounted inside (see photo)). The real question shoudl be why has no one spotted the hole in the marke for window unitst? Target can u hear me?

Who would have thought A/C's could be displayable. Speaking of Air Conditioners, the heat and humidity in the city are increasing slowly but surely as we head for another swealtering summer. Any thoughts on recommended Air Conditioners? There are an enormous number of window units available for under $300 that all seem to have the same features. I purchased one this past weekend and am quite unhappy. When the condenser comes on and off, it shakes the entire window and wall! Any suggestions from the gurus out there about energy efficient, quiet and affordable window units?

Ductless split systems aren't really ideal for renters since you'll have to cut a hole in your wall and permanently mount the unit to the exterior of the building. Also, I think they mostly run over $1000, plus additional installation fees. Hopefully they'll become cheaper in the US as they become more common.

If the room you're cooling is small, there's a Carrier Window unit that I'm afraid might be discontinued. The LCA061P is only 7" tall with 6000 BTUs.

I like the Art Cool split system. Any ideas who carries it and could install it for me?

I own my ground-floor apartment and would love to have a ductless split-system.

The question for me, is can I hang the condesners on the outside walls like a traditional a/c unit? It seems like all the split systems have condesers that look too large to hang.

I could run the min-duct through the basement I suppose... not sure how I would get it up through the wall though.

Anyone know of a good place in NYC to install split systems? Or, better yet, someone willing to just answer some questions?

I tried quite a number of air conditioners for the past 15 years. The most reliable one being Toshiba. This is the first time I bought an air-conditioner from LG (art cool model) and I must say that my family have been very impressed by the electricity consumption and it's reliability. Currently, I have 6 air conditioners in the home. The most problematic air conditioner is Panasonic Ionizer model by the way!

Maxwell - What kind of installation fees did you have to pay for your art cool? We've been getting bids that equal the cost of the unit!

Christine - We've been using a portable AC unit that sits on the floor and doesn't block your window except for about 8 inches for the air hose connection. The DeLonghi Pinguino doesn't need any water trays emptied, and it's been very reliable for three years now. We got it on sale for about $600, but that was when they were first introduced. I saw a similar one on the Costco website today for about $350. Even if you end up paying more, remember that you can take it with you to your next place and move it from room to room as you like.

Weve been installing these LG Artcool units in the UK for sometime and they have proved to be reliable. The customers love the look of them and they are very efficient. Just a note, in all the years of fitting ac in the UK we have only ever fitted one window type of unit, how different the markets are in the US and europe.
