Ron Rezek's Ball Fan

05.11.ball1.jpg

We installed this ceiling fan in our home last year, as we're real holdouts when it comes to using the old a/c. It's the Ball Fan, designed by Ron Rezek for The Modern Fan Company...

We've been very happy with the simple design. There are more adventurous fans out there, but we liked this one's ability to just fade away. Ours is gloss white, though it also comes in brushed stainless, as shown in the photos.

05.11.ball2.jpgHere's the one thing we hate about it, which we did't know before purchasing. When used as a light source, the glass shade on the fan is slightly elongated instead of round, which totally ruins the Ball Fan premise. The fan comes standard with both covers, so you can always switch to the non-light option if it's a deal-breaker for you.

I bought them too - non light version - one for the nursery and one for the livingroom. We are going to buy a 3rd one for the bedroom and like you said, the hestitation is shape of the light. The one in the nursery has shorter blades than the one in the livingroom. For some reason thought the setting is set on same, the one in the nursery spins much faster. Does anyone know if that is natural? Or is it a mistake?

Looks like it's about $250.

I was all ready to buy this fan until I took a closer look at it inside Lighting by gregory on bowery. The deal was broken for me by the visibility of the screws attaching the blades to the fan. Any sleekness is woefully sacrificed when I have to stare at screws every day. I feel that for a fan sporting high design and a high price tag, they should've put just a little bit of thought into hiding the hardware. The blades on the aluminum version are painted grey and so are the screws. Not attractive. Not something visible when the blades are spinning, yes, but a major aesthetic oversight, as far as I'm concerned.

Interestingly, the bullet version of this fan does not have visible screws and succeeds in the design much more.

I have had my ball fan (plain, no light) for nearly four years... I LUV IT! I didn't have a switch available, so I added a remote control instead. Well worth the extra to have the remote. I also like how quiet it is. I plan to move it with me, and replace it with a cheap one from the Depot for the next owner of my place.
