apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Amy Ross

You can't categorize Amy Ross. By her own admission she is "interested in the idea of artist as mad scientist," and she pulls it off with panache. She is a sweet, mad artist.

With a background in religious studies and divinity, Amy jumped the tracks into the artworld in 2000 and has been answering this question ever since: "What would happen if the DNA sequence of a plant or mushroom were spliced with that of an animal?"

Working on paper and directly on walls, her drawings are beautiful, romantic and disarming.

A Boston resident, Amy currently has a show at the Allston Skirt Gallery - "Nature Morph" - through the end of the month, and we think she'd be a great resource for transforming a big blank wall in your home.

I love Amy Ross's work! I've been to her studio during the South End Open Studios in Boston and in addition to being a fantastic artist, she seems like a really nice person.

I immediately recognized her work when I saw the lamb's head popping out of the flower. I am a Boston resident and saw some of her work in a group show in the financial district over 18 months ago....everyone's work was really great but hers stuck out above the crowd. she's really amazingly talented...I love that you are featuring her!

love love love it. it's always daunting though to go to an artist's site and have no prices posted... i always assume that means i have no hope whatsoever of every affording one of these lovelies.

She's a great person too. I am her friend and her interior designer!

I was at her show at the Allston Skirt Gallery (It was packed!) and she's sure to sell out, but I know she'll do commissioned pieces.

Good art has value and adds value to one's life, but no, it's not in expensive.

Wow. I hate to ask but, does she have prints?

Jon

She did have a print on tinyshowcase.com last year, and they sometimes feature artists more than once. So maybe if she does another one for them, you could get a print that way. Best of all, they are only $20!

Thank you all for your incredibly kind comments about my work! (And a big thank you to Apartment Therapy.)

Christine is right: I am gearing up for a new Tiny Showcase print that will be released in the coming weeks. I am also meeting with several printmakers next weekend (in LA!) to discuss making prints. I will have updates on my website soon about all my new projects.

Thanks again for the kudos! This has made my day.

Great! I'll keep an eye on tinyshowcase and your site.

Keep up the good work lady.

Artists don't post prices on their sites. This doesn't mean anything. You should always contact the artist or gallery and ask. Lots of time things are in your price range, and both galleries and artists can work out a payment plan or often even take credit cards. Essentially, most artwork which is considered "affordable" is in the $800 - $2,000 range. You can sometimes find things for less, and always for more. But something bought at $800 - $1000 is considered normal. You can afford most work, as artists always have smaller drawings, etc. You just have to ask. Plus, it is always better to buy actual work than prints...There are SO many artists out there, definitely go for the originals.

I bought an original at Junc gallery in LA and have been a huge fan since. They are affordable depending on your definition.
