As the Crow Flies Mobile by Contexture Design
Design Showcase 2009

Materials: Outdated road maps, recycled card stock, tread, wire
Price Point: $49 CAD

"A stylish hanging mobile for babies, parents and anyone who appreciates good design in their nest. This handmade mobile portrays a family of crows returning to a communal rookery. Family is important to crows. They mate for life, live in family groups, and even though offspring may travel the country and live elsewhere, they return often to visit...."

"Laser-cut from recycled black paper* and salvaged outdated roadmaps, the seven two-sided hanging pieces depict 14 crows and a large hand-folded tree. The crows are realistically rendered in black while the flipside reveals the colourful travel maps.

Every evening, in cities all over North America, you can see hundreds of crows flying home. Maps from across the continent are used to reflect the universality of this phenomenon and the distances these birds travel.

* 30 per cent post-consumer waste, the highest percentage available"

That's amazing. I love the thought and care that goes into it, plus the customization.

Sure beats some colorful piece of un-recyclable plastic made in China that costs $25.

This is adorable! I just wish the tree weren't cut off on the bottom; why not give it roots or do something else interesting with it?

The mobile is attractive but I'd be embarrassed to own anything with that blurb attached to it, 'family is important to crows'!!
