Family Trees in the Home

Composing a family tree is an interesting study on heritage, personal history, and family structure. The hard work that goes into such research can be rewarding and beautiful. Here, a few ideas for displays inspired by family trees:

What better way to organize and share family photos in your home, teach your family about their history, and remind yourself of your collective past on a daily basis?

1 a fan chart and wall of family photos by Leslie at Design Mom
2 a balloon family tree from The Small Object
3 a more literal family tree display by Fresh Paint decorative painting
4 a glam version from Decor Pad
5 a hand-made wall hanging by Teresa, also at Decor Pad

I think the first one is fabulous. It looks like a real piece of art.

I love geneology. Forgive me for the pop culture reference, but I always thought it'd be really cool to have a family tree display like the one in Sirius Black's house in "Harry Potter" (a tapestry with all of the names and relations in the family, going back ages and ages). Minus the burns eliminating the "muggles" in the tree, of course.

I love love love these! Just a little note to anyone who wants to do this -- you probably should use photocopies of precious pictures if they are to be on display. Even if a wall doesn't get direct sunlight, over years, the UV rays will fade and otherwise deteriorate a photo, not to mention other sorts of environmental damages. A good photocopy/scan on display will allow you to keep the original safe in a acid-free environment (album or photo box).

Me too Eaevansmd!!!- I also have been trying to talk my wife into a mural similar to the tree in Harry Potter, but haven't found any good stills.

Glancing at the first one, I thought it was a vintage floor plan / seating chart for a theater. Now I'm wondering how to find one of those...

I really wish there was a closeup of the first one so you can see how they organized it.

I'm surprised this fan-shaped chart from an old AT post wasn't included:

The third family tree is absolutely gorgeous. I totally want to find a way to replicate that in my home. My mother gave me a huge box full of old family pictures, granted I don't know a lot of the people, I would still love to display these beautiful black and white shots. As soon as I saw this post, I could feel the wheels turning in my brain. Thanks for the post.

These are so cool! Great way to have art and family photos in the house. And probably fun for guests to check out.

My aunt just gave everyone a scrapbook with some amazingly beautiful b&w photos. I wasn't sure how to display them without looking like a page from the Pottery Barn catalog. The first photo is nice, the chart really makes it. And the second photo is AWESOME! The third and fourth are a little too cheesy for me and the fifth is really sweet, very Martha :)

One thing we've always done is to redecorate the Christmas tree, the day after Christmas, removing the holiday specific ornaments and replacing them with small frames that contain pictures of loved ones. Sort of a 'living' family tree between Christmas and New Year's Day. It's an annual ritual we've come to love.
