Good Questions: What To Do With This Wall?

3.20wall.jpgHello AT,

I've been having a hard time deciding what to do with the blank wall behind my TV.

As a main focal point of the living space (my bed faces this wall) in my studio apt, I would like it to be visually interesting, but streamlined and uncluttered.

Right now I'm thinking of getting a long fabric panel (in lieu of paint) and a couple of picture ledges up there, but not really sure if this is the way to go.

Any thoughts? Thanks! Q

they make a really nice rust patina paint that is supposed to be used on pots and small objects but it looks really nice as an accent wall. you paint on an iron based paint and when it dries paint over it a clear oxidizer. the more you put on the brighter the oranges and reds are on the wall.

here is the site with the information and paint names. It is used for smaller things but i have seen it on a wall and it was awesome.

The fabric panel is a good idea. I think shelving is unnecessary.

What about a large piece of art? For cheap art you can blow up an impage or photo using Rasterbator and then switch it out if you get bored.

Or maybe chalkboard paint?

why dont you hang the art thats propped up on the floor on there? Fabric would be quite nice.

I've also seen individual strings of interesting things, west elm used to carry a nicer version of this, Imagine each strand as an individual string you could hang and space as you see fit:

(this was the first link I found, there are many nicer versions out there in all kinds of colours..from mellow zen natural to screaming hot pink and discoball mirrors)

you could put the print on one side and the hanging strings on the other.

You could paint a stenciled wallpaper pattern on the wall.

I would then wall-mount the television, install a shelf as close to the size of your components as possible, then remove the tv stand.

i agree with art. mount the tv, and raise it. creat a "mantle" below it with the floating shelves or ledges.

It's difficult to tell you want to do with that space without addressing the rest of the room.

It appears that there is a recess to the left that may be better suited to a long-low console with the TV above - but it's hard to tell because we have limited information.

I'd suggest looking at the whole room arrangement again.

what about wallpaper on the smaller wall (that kicks out) and then painting the other wall a solid color?

there are tons of great new wallpapers out there!

for a more economical route, i'd try the stencils, but I did that once and it was a huge, time consuming project.

oh, and yes I have to agree that the tc should probably go.
sorry.

What if you bought an old wrought-iron or wooden fireplace. Paint it a vibrant color, high gloss black or magenta, etc. Something crazy! Then mount TV on top. TV will then be at proper height, you'll have a focal point, and you can do the clevor "candles in the fireplace" below. Or hide the cable box, etc.

Whatever you do, make it unexpected so it doesn't come across as country.

if the wall is painted i would suggest stripes in a high gloss in the same color.

I like the fabric panel idea. I wouldn't hang shelves, I think anything small would just compete w/the tv and look cluttered. I also like the idea of hanging the tv and removing that stand - it looks small against that wall. You could hang shelves to mimic some kind of console, or get a credenza or closed, larger media unit.

One thing I've considered that may work for you is mounting a piece of plywood to the wall with a few inches of clearance, mounting the tv to the plywood, and running the wires behing the plywood through drilled holes that would be hidden by the tv. You can put a credenza/media unit in front of the plywood, to hide the wires coming out at the bottom of the plywood, or mount the plywood so the bottom edge meets the floor. Of course, paint the plywood. I would paint it an accent color pulled from something else in your room. That would give the wall some interest while keeping the focus on your tv.

You could also mount the fabric on the plywood, but I would cut out a nice generous hole behind the tv, so there is no risk of the fabric catching fire.

If your are a really artsy type person you could glass tile the entire wall as an accent. I saw someone did this surrounding there front door and it looked amazing. You could also just paint it a different color, stencil a wallpaper like design on it or actually wallpaper it. You could do a photo/art collage which might be nice. I think using a large photo or art piece may look funny with the TV but that's just me.

i agree with the idea of a long tv console, or a wall hung tv with long, low shelves underneath. the current tv stand doesn't have the right proportions.

i think a wide band of color from ceiling to floor would look great on the section of the wall. just paint the middle part, not all the way to the edges. or a panel of wall paper, floor to ceiling, with a simple wood trim along the edges.

oh, and i think shelves higher on the wall would look cluttered.
