Handmade Inspiration: Rowland & Chinami Ricketts

When we featured Nine Japanese Noren last week, it wasn't long before we heard from Apartment Therapy reader Kana, urging us to take a look at the noren and other handmade textiles of Rowland & Chinami Ricketts. And boy, are we glad we did...

Kana tells us the two are classically trained in the Japanese tradition of indigo dying and ikat weaving, and that their noren are rich with deep color and fine texture.

Says Chinami: Using traditional Japanese kasuri techniques and natural dyes, I strive to create honest textiles completely by hand.

Says Rowland: Using plants as dyes I transfer their color to the cloth with traditional, natural techniques, creating both artwork and functional textiles.

We've shared just a few looks at their beautiful work here. To see the rest, visit Rowland & Chinami Ricketts. (thanks, Kana!)

Their website is beautiful. How they harvest and create their dyes is art alone. Fiber Arts has quite a mystique to it. I love the natural rich indigo color and wouldn't mind having one of their pieces on my wall! Thank you for sharing a true art.

Amazingly beautiful textiles! They all are works of art, especially the ikat in the 6th photo.
