Michael Kenna

These are not your average black and whites. We ran into Michael Kenna's work when we were googling around the web looking for images of apple trees. Good thing. We don't know much about him, except that he is around 51, was born in England and now lives in San Francisco...

His photographs are stunning. All black and white, the pictures are largely landscapes in which no one is seen, just a tree, a window, the water...doing its thing. With the sort of perfection he is seeking, it is true that he can at times venture into the ype of art photography that is seen on postcards - it's too perfect - but the best images set themselves apart.

He is represented in New York by the Robert Mann Gallery (212.989.7600).

Linda - Robert Mann Gallery is his dealer in NYC. You can buy his photos there. The ones shown on www.allposters.com are posters.

Good luck.

What is the price range for his works?

They used to sell his works (prints) at either Storehouse or Crate & Barrel. I can't remember which, and Storehouse is gone now, but the price on the framed prints at this furniture store was reasonably low. Of course a print isn't the same as an original, and I'm sure like any other artist there could be a wide range of prices depending on the size of the piece and whether it has been mass produced or is a higher quality limited edition print. If you just want an art print you can get one from somewhere like www.allposters.com , where an 18x24 Michael Kenna art print is around $25.

If you are in the Ann Arbor, MI area, the University of Michigan Art Museum (temporarily housed in an annex space for the next three years of a construction project), there is a fascinating exhibit of Kenna's photographs of the Ford Rouge plant in Detroit. For more details, see http://www.umma.umich.edu/ The photographs are quite amazing.
