NY Good Questions: What Should I Do To The Walls?

6.25chair.jpgDear AT,

When I moved into my new rental, I splurged on this wonderful pink chair/ottoman combo.

I'm absolutely IN LOVE with it.

Since it's such a strong piece, I waited for it to arrive before I put anything on the walls.

Well now it's here, and I'm not sure how to decorate the space.

There's a lot of white wall to fill.

I was thinking of putting a series of 8x10 framed black and white pics around the room.

But now I'm wondering whether it needs a few more flashes of color...

The space between the windows screams for something, and there's quite an expanse of wall behind the chair itself, and near the brick portion of the wall.

And yes, I need window treatments, too. Thoughts?

Thanks! Claire

"There's a lot of white wall to fill."

Must the walls stay white? Because with that color, I'd really like to see a curry color on the walls, just to start with. THEN if you want black and white prints, that would at least have something to pop out from.

I agree w/ Curtis - that would give this room some sizzle!

i agree with a group of black/white photos, but i would mat the photos with a color(a violet, pink, blue?), and a simple, wide black frame. those could go between the windows, and i would frame a large, interesting poster to go on the other wall.........i have no affiliation with this website, but they have the most interesting images: http://www.polishposter.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

rental, so you can't paint? i would go with simple white wood blinds........i was pleased with this company's products after reading about them on this apt therapy: http://www.theshadestore.com/

if you can paint, choose some mini pots from ben moore....grays....paint "squares", label, and watch the hue change with the light in the apt.

bold, printed pillows...........

I like Curtis' idea. Curry would totally make it hot hot hot!

Um, I think I'm in love with your chair too. Where is it from?

Buy artwork you really love. It'll hold it's own on the wall, in a way that art bought for "pops of color" never will.

I just realized that my comment could sound snippy, which isn't how I meant it. The point is, you have a strong sense of design, as evidenced by your careful furniture selection. Take the same care to select art. Your true taste will "go" with everything else.

I think you'd do well to keep the walls blank until you find artwork you love as much as the chair.

Also, I love a dark grey with that fuschia...

after "curry" being mentioned, i would look at b.moore semolina, morning sunshine, sweet butter.......good call, curtis.

the polish posters include images you will fall in love with...
not just "wall fillers". you could try your hand at some mono-prints on a rainy week-end..........plexi rectangles, a brayer, black acrylic printing ink.....inscribe images, symbols with Q-tips........place wet side down, and print on rice paper.

Pale curry. Sounds heavenly. Don't go too intense, or it looks amateur.

I'm stalking this posting because I'm still in love with the chair and hoping to find out where it's from <:>

Thank you so much for your suggestions! Since it's a rental, I'm not able to paint, but I applaud your color suggestions.

Idea Chick, the chair and ottoman are from Ligne Roset's Moel line. Was way expensive, but I'll tell you this much: it's the last thing I sit in at night and the first place I park my butt every morning. I love it.

Thanks! It's on my wish list. Grey velvet curtains might work, they you wouldn't have to paint.

For the window treatments, I went to a professional.

How do I choose a window treatment professional? has a ton of helpful information, incase you decide to go that route.
