Pat Pickett: Trees That Draw Themselves

2004_9_23_pat.jpgIf Ivan had a pen. Pat Pickett has a great idea, it is just a really tough one to imagine how she does it. Attaching an ink pen to the branch of a Live Oak and letting it wander across a large piece of paper for two hours in "moderate breezes," she created the Pollock-like and totally alive drawing at right.

Callling her show at The Drawing Room, "Wind in the Canopy," Pat Pickett has recorded on paper the individual voices of the trees. An old oak produces small, dense marks that don't stray far, whereas a youthful willow may cover the paper in long winded scrawl. Good stuff and reminiscent of Andy Goldsworthy's "snowball drawings." The show has just ended and it ain't close, but don't let that stop you. (Thanks, Amy!) MGR

Pickett is a visceral philosopher poet in her connectedness to the tree branch as her drawing arm. I've watched her work. It grows.
