Suspended Migration

Introducing Ascha Drake, artist and teacher, who does her own work while helping to make the world a better place for hundreds of NYC public school kids in some really tough neighborhoods. I was recently treated to a sneak preview of her encaustic works (made with colored pigments suspended in melted wax) and couldn’t wait to post them.

Intimate in scale, these works show her fascination with a variety of materials. She is constantly experimenting, embalming various mixed media elements (inks, papers, you name it) in the layers of translucent color, and then carving back into those layers. The overall effect? Sumptuous veils of patterns and textures for your eyes to wander through. Yum.

AschaÂ’s work is simply exquisite. Her pieces are extremely three dimensional and textured, with so many layers...a picture on a computer screen piece of paper cannot due her work justice. One must see the pieces in person. They are beautiful.

Although I have known Ascha since childhood, because I had lived in Africa for so many years, it was only last Thursday at the opening that I was able to see her recent body of work. Even if she wasnÂ’t my dear friend, I would feel this positive about her art!!!

And now to throw in a little advertisement: If anyone does want see her work, Friday would be a great time to go to Art 101, because you can also meet and speak with Ascha from 6-8pm.

Congratulations on your solo show, Ascha, and congratulations on being posted on my #1 favorite website!!

Congratulations Ascha!!! Your new work looks so beautiful, even online, but I can just imagine how subtle and rich it is in person. Hope to have a chance to see it.

Ascha, your work is truly beautiful. I had no idea. So incredibly dense and imaginative. And your sense of color is startling and satisfying. Being of the art world I know how virtually impossible it is to be shown in New York, never mind a solo show. Here's to a continuing upward spiral and MUCH success.
