Vintage Smokey the Bear Posters

01animalposter.jpg

I like to supplement my art collection with the occasional poster. But I have a confession. I got burned on the Keep Calm posters. I ordered my Keep Calm poster from the originating bookstore in the U.K. for £2. I don't want to dwell on it, but they were definitely over-saturated in the design blog world. So when I was looking for a poster to replace Keep Calm. I decided to go vintage.

I was tipped off to the posters created by the National Association of State Foresters by one of my favorite poster hounds, Maquette. Tim Nix has them all. I was fascinated by Smokey the Bear commercials when I was a kid, and I loved how each poster has it's own saying. I kept my eyes open on craigslist and ebay. Finally, I found a guy with a Smokey poster collection on Craigslist, who agreed to ship me the Baby Animal poster. For $15, I became the proud owner of a Smokey the Bear poster.

I've got a few posters in my house, but I don't worry about seeing them everywhere, as they're all limited-edition and/or have limited appeal. You can see posters promoting an exhibit by Ryan McGinness, a screening of Jan Svankmajer's "Alice," and an album by Audioafterbirth, among others:

Hmm... you don't want to dwell on the KCCO poster even though it has little to do with this one and you presumably know that the mere mention of it always stirs a huge debate.

I framed a promotional poster of Norman Rockwell's "Gossip" painting, which was used to advertise a 1997 exhibit. I think it's such a fun print.

A customer of ours came in and framed three of the old Smokey posters... except they weren't charts. I remember one had bambii and another was a close up shot of his head... I think I'm gonna have to ask her where she got 'em next time I see her! The charts displayed here are just wonderful though:)

so not to start anything (im totally saying this in a good natured way, trust me), but the way you talk about the Keep Calm poster makes it sound like when people talk about a band and say "i knew about them before they were big" or whatever. Just sayin is all... :)

anyway, to answer the question i am in my thirties and way to old to have band posters, but my husband and i did keep out one belle and sebastian poster that we liked alot from my youth, and really seems more like art than a typical band poster, so it has stayed out in the living room.

I used to have one or two of those Smokey posters, including (I think?) that wildflower one.

If you like nature-themed posters, the National Park Service puts out several with designs by Charles Harper. You can order them here:

I have the Sierra one and I love it to pieces. (They're much prettier in person than the photos on the site suggest.)

I have some replicas of the old South Shore Line posters. I love the colors and design - and I live in Chicagoland so they have a nice local appeal.

I have two movie posters, one of Kurosawa's Dreams, and an advance Beauty & the Beast poster.

My grandfather used to have this poster hanging in the mud room, and I've thought about tracking down my own.

Amy what a fun round-up, thanks for the link-love. I love posters with clusters of things on them. Have you seen Claire Nereim's work? I have a couple of her posters in my apt.
XO,
Samantha

Amy, thank you for this post. Brings back a lot of fond memories of my grandfather's home office. He was president of the National Ad Council, which created the first Smokey campaign. I remember seeing these posters scattered around his desk alongside McGruff and Iron Eyes Cody (Keep America Beautiful Campaign). I think I'm going to have to hunt a few of these down now.

My favorite is one I brought back from my stay in Bulgaria - it's a communist-era ad for International Women's Day (March 8). I love the woman and her bouquet of tulips.

I have two favorites. One is a communist-era advertisement for International Women's Day (March 8) that I bought when I lived in Sofia, Bulgaria. I love the woman with her bouquet of tulips.

The other is a 70s poster of the Kliban cat playing in his guitar singing the mousies song. It always hung in the mudroom at my grandparents' house, and it brings back fond childhood memories.

Oh wow, memories! I used to get those at the fair every year. Wonder if I still have some in the attic back home.

Actually, speaking of Charley Harper's National Park posters, you can get them all here:

http://fabframes.wordpress.com/2008/08/21/national-parks-posters-by-charley-harper/

Some are still available via the Department of Interior, and some are being published by Charley's son Brett [at least, I think that's the arrangement].

I love unusual posters and cheap art -
here's a few I have or plan to get:
watercolors from a flea market in Sofia, Bulgaria:
http://huntpeck.blogspot.com/2008/08/favorite-foreign-finds.html

Dan McCarthy's work is amazing - graphic, lovely and slightly quirky:
http://www.danmccarthy.org/art%20prints/00artprints.new.html

Koznydan's wave of bunnies hangs in my dining room:
http://theburningmetaphor.blogspot.com/2007/05/japanese-wave-of-bunnies.html

And this one I plan to buy soon of the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (WPA style poster with an octopus in a tree! awesomeness ensues!)
http://www.cafepress.com/treeoctopus.114972313

Old School Stationers also has really nice options for wall art: http://www.oldschoolstationers.com/index.html

The KCCO poster-explosion has boomed and died, thankfully. Let's all move on and find art that fits OUR personalities.
