Liz's Herald Square Apartment with Go Go Cat and Koo Koo Kitty
"3 cats, a turtle and a lizard - Yay pet month!" So say's Hollie in today's survey of what pets readers have at home. While Hollie definitely seemed to be in the lead for sheer quantity, cats RULED our survey by a hefty margin. The difficulty with them? Keeping them from puking and scratching furniture to death (see comments). In the meantime, I dug up some seriously inspirational house tours and mini tours where man and beast live harmoniously and with style. Enjoy!..

First off, I think all of these pet features are very cute. However, I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find it disturbing to see so many pictures of cats up on counter tops, tables, etc., as if to say, "awww... look at my precious puss-puss exhibiting his obnoxiously bad habits." As a former cat person, the one thing I could not stand was sitting down eating a meal and then having him jump up on the table trying to score some people-grub. These cats need to be taught some boundaries!

Oh goody, the tour with the unforgetable 'cat's-ass on the table' comment is back (the first one above). Let's hear all those comments again!

And, I'm desperate for someone to build those cat stairs and runway in my place.

Yay! I'm quoted!
Wow, that cat hair thing is something else...

If you don't like cats on the table, then don't read the pet entries. Simple. I, on the other hand, let my cats get on whatever furniture/counter/bed they want. I don't consider it bad behavior . . . it's simply cat behavior.

As a former cat owner of 18 years who had three cats in a small one bedroom and they never, ever, sat on tables or counters, I'd have to agree with Hejira. I make the same mental note when I see folks' cats stroll the kitchen surfaces as I do when I see folks put their plates down on the floor for the dog to clean off ... I can visit, but wouldn't eat there!

My cat goes where ever she wants to and I love it and enjoy seeing her find new places to find.
Love that gray cat in the first photo so much.
I do think all cats are photo hounds indeed---they should all be wearing dark glasses like in Hollywood.:-)

It is rather revolting to think that people eat off that table. And frankly, a bit odd that people with cats have no issues with it. It reminds me of that TV commercial where the woman wipes the counter clean with raw chicken...

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I eat my food off plates.

Haahaa, I was thinking the same thing. I don't remember the last time I served up a sandwich and chips and ate them off the table. I have 3 cats and they aren't allowed on the table or counters, but I don't think that it proves a level of cleanliness. I mean now that i think about it I am sure that my cats have sat their little booty on my pillow once or twice.

I have three cats and they know they aren't allowed on tables/counter tops etc. They're pretty good, no puking or going outside the box, but the amount of cat hair (especially in the summer) is the biggest hassle. There is lots of vacuuming multiple times a week, but there always seems to be more. They also scratched up my sofa, but its from ikea so I don't really care that much.

Weather you have cats or not isn't it customary to wipe surfaces with soap and water before placing plates and flatware on them or use place mats. Or do all these critics just throw the food on the board! I see people on TV and movies sit on counters and I am really grossed out. Is that what Americans do at home, sit on places where food is prepared? Help me with that one. How about not taking your shoes off when you enter your home and having indoor slippers? And now you're worried about a cat's ass? All they do is keep themselves clean all day long and they are better at it than humans.

I totally agree with Erika, I don't know about you but I eat with plates. And I wash my counters and tables frequently.

This pic makes me laugh and think immediately of a kind of private laugh my husband and I have always had... The observation, "Cat's on the table"....made by a non-cat-lover friend of ours; she would inevitably utter this comment whenever she visited, prompting us to state the obvious now and forever whenever we see our "cat on the table".
