I've noticed the resurgence in shag rugs in the past year. No longer the polyester shagginess of yore, they have a more modern feeling and offer the opportunity to show off natural fibers in a big, chunky and bright way that feels really good under your feet. Here are my top recent picks. Two of these below I have purchased personally and for clients, while the other I found while judging the annual design review at ID Magazine in the winter...
Tekla by Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg for Kasthall - This new rug/carpet from Sweden is won design distinction from our ID Magazine judging panel, and I got to call it "the puppy of the review, because nobody can NOT like a puppy." Made of wool and linen, it combines "ancient ways of weaving Nordic sheep’s wool with contemporary patterns inspired by candy and confetti."

Bravoure by Christiane Müller for Danskina - This stuff is pure luxury and more easily available in the US. Hand tufted New Zealand wool is woven in varying lengths and thicknesses to capture amazing color arrays. Available in 48 colors. I installed it in a clients bedroom and loved doing it.

Benson and Quinn Shag Rugs by Pottery Barn - Okay, this is the low end choice, and the very one (the Quinn) we put into our bedroom a few months ago. The Quinn is a copy of the higher end versions that are also all wool and German (I think) in design origin. Big chunky strands of wool stand out against our dark stained floor like thick spaghetti. Walking over this is fun.

I'll second the nod for the Bravoure. It's lush and plush and I love the fact that you can buy it in a custom size (mine is 5' x 12').

I adore shag rugs but I haven't yet ventured into buying one because I'm afraid they cannot be cleaned (and surely cleaning won't be an easy thing). So please, could you give me an advise how to deal with the dirt on shaggy rugs cause I'm definitely in love with'em?
