''There were no extra turnings, no enhanced carvings, nothing extraneous. They took the essence of a chair, for example, and reduced it to its 'chairness.''' - Richard Russo, a dealer in East Chatham, N.Y. (via NYTimes)

I've been a big fan of Shaker design ever since I first visited my friend's family, whose great grandparents purchased a small, decommissioned Shaker Village in the Berkshires in the early 1900's. The village still consists of about six buildings that have been largely untouched by time...

Paint colors, furniture and farm implements are largely original, and one gets a real sense of how complete the Shaker vision was from simply being in their rooms. This list below represents the work of a number of years, documenting my trips to Shaker country and my efforts to track down authentic and near authentic sources. Enjoy, use this and if you have any good tips to add to this list, email me (maxwell@apartmenttherapy.com)

I've always loved the Shaker aesthetic, but it makes me laugh to wonder how having 16 brooms in one room could ever be described as "nothing extraneous"! : )

> 16 brooms

If you have 16 people sweeping each morning, it isn't. Remember that the Shakers worked as a community, rather than as individuals or families.
