Best Water & Wine Glasses for Summer 2009

6-1-glasses.jpg

We had dinner at a friend's house two weeks ago and they served us wine in these glasses up top (bottom left). Though they are really water tumblers, they have a passing resemblance to the Riedel stemless O Glasses, but they are a bit heavier and a bit more durable. Turning them over, I was surprised to discover that they were crystal and by Alessi. I've tracked them down here for you...

A few days later I was visiting the CB2 store on Broadway (looking at outdoor chairs), when I noticed their glass collection. With much lower price points, I saw a number of designs that were really, really cool. The CB2 folks have good eyes:

>> Beaker Glasses
- these look like plastic cups but are made of durable chem lab beaker glass and stackable.

>> Stack Barware - These have a very cool shape that allows them to be big, thin and also stack. They look like old fashioned soda fountain glasses, but with a slight twist. I thought they were very distinctive.

This got me thinking about my OLD favorites, so I went just a bit further to complete the list of favorite everyday glasses for 2009.

>> Martha's Favorite Hadley Glasses at Macy's - This seems to be a reissue of the old Martha's favorite glasses, which are awesome, but were discontinued when her catalog folded.

>> Gio Glasses - Handmade in Poland, these babies are really, really thin and stylish, but not for use around babies. :-)

>> Pebble Optic Tumblers - For those of you who want everyday glasses that won't break, I really love these guys that I found in the Grenadine Islands.

I hate to be a downer, but I cannot stand the Stack Barware glasses. I work at a retirement community, and that's what is used in the cafeteria. The shape is just not sexy or modern at all.

The rest are delightful.

I always like the Moma store selection. Love the inside out martini glasses and the spring glassware -really cute.

I also like the Cooper Hewitt Museum store - they showcase some of the best industrial designs and sell some of it too.
