Collections: A New Feature for Passionate Collectors

11-10-collections.jpg

I was talking recently with Gregory about the crazy devotion of sneakerheads to their shoe collections, and he confessed to me that he was a reformed sneakerhead himself. He used to spend a lot of money on sneakers and had a really cool collection, but that is now all in his past (all that remains is above). You could tell that there was a pang of regret in his voice as he said this. But he still collects anime toys :-) (also above right - his whole house is here)...

Collectors are a certain breed of people. They are passionate, they are focused and the best ones know a ton about what they collect, making them experts in their field. And there is a difference between a good and a bad collection. A good one can become art. A bad one? Clutter.

In honor of collectors, collections and the roll they play in interior design, I'm starting a new feature today with a small roundup of some great collections in our sites and then taking submissions. We're going to call it simply Collections, and see if we can find the best and the brightest collections displayed in the home.

Nothing is out of bounds. We'll take sneakers, shells, paintings, toys, corks... you name it - as long as it's amazing. Got a great collection?

I love the pez collection, and the sneakers, and the anime. I'm hopeless at displaying anything or collecting, although I did once start a daguerrotype collection (don't know how to display them, and some need to be repaired).

The pez collection is cute, but in general, collections just seem like clutter to me.

I'll go for the Bib collection, but sneakers on stairs are just shoes. The mirrors are okay.

Hrrmm... while I DO enjoy seeing different variants of things I love: modern chairs, bookbindings etc. I dont know that I want to collect them. Collections have a way of enslaving people (altho perhaps thats too strong of a word). But still, immense amounts of time and money and resources can be sucked up by collecting things.

I have a collection of PEZ over 300 strong that I keep in a vintage hat box. I gave them to my daughter this year and we're going to eventually hang them in a grid like above.
