I just went on a whirlwind visit to Toronto this past weekend to speak at the Interior Design Show (IDS) along with Grace Bonney (Design Sponge) and Harry Wakefield (MoCoLoco). They flew us up on Porter Airlines, which has the best branding and graphics of any airline I'd ever seen (ok, maybe Virgin)(Porter was done by Winkreative)....
IDS 2009: Highlights from Toronto!
Oh, Toronto!
Sort of like a cross between ICFF and Brooklyn Designs, IDS is the largest contemporary design event in Canada and carries a broad mix of big names and small names, established design and upcoming design. They've gone out of their way to make sure that this show is not only profitable, but also interesting. Below are some highlights to give you a taste...
This is what we saw when we walked onstage at the Direct Energy Center for our panel: Design Trends by the Minute. It was a packed house!
In their 5x5 section five designers did model rooms. This one I just HAD to photograph because it was so over the top. A dark bedroom with a flaming wall of lights, just behind a window on the other side of the bed was an Audi r8, ready for the getaway. >> Clayton Budd and Callum Maclachlan of 64th and Queen
This Drooglike dresser was in their Prototype section, which is a juried area for items not currently in production or in limited production. Some of the coolest stuff was here. >> Rob Southcott
This company had the most beautiful designs for filtered water coolers. These egg-like, Eve-like dispensers house their own replaceable filter that lasts 6 months. The tap is like a beer tap and very satisfying to pull. >> Aquaovo
Veuve Clicquot was the sponsor (nice), and had these crazy Karim Rashid coolers on display. They have a cooling insert and also light up in a rechargable fashion. >> The Globalight
Here's Brian Richer of Castor outside of his Winnebago display. He's 1/2 of a design house that rocks the raw, industrial and recycled. I'll show you more of him tomorrow, but meanwhile you can check out the Castor site. >> CastorDesign.ca
These beautiful chairs were slim, light and memorable. Made in wood and in plastic, the red one folds down and stacks. >> Jang Yoon
