Me at the outdoor oven managing the fire and getting ready to cook up the pizzas.
While in Italy over the past two weeks we did a ton of cooking, a lot of it on a grill, and some of it in a big outdoor oven. Today to celebrate the end of Outdoor Month (Travel is next), I want to highlight three outdoor cooking designs: a very special outdoor oven and the little grill that I saw while staying for a week at a 17th century farmhouse in Chianti, as well as the grill in the USA that I crave (no gas, just real fire). Enjoy!
You start by getting the oven ready with a big fire in the middle of the day.
The oven was absolutely beautiful inside, and glowed when the fire was lit.
Here's a pizza going into the oven. I cooked them on the stones inside, but put them on the fire first because they were so wet they didn't slide off the peel.
The wood oven is to the left of this pic, and this shows the view while you are cooking.

This is the view from the grill. Those are grape vines and olive trees in the distance, with a huge fig tree in the right foreground.

what is the name of the lovely farmhouse in Chianti? I am heading to that region of Italy in a couple weeks and would enjoy checking it out...

stone, fire and iron. conjures up some carnal instincts. that technology hasn't change since which age and is still awe-inspiring. I'm not so good with my prehistoric ages.

OHHH! I'm building an authentic wood fired pizza oven in my backyard at this very moment! I suspect it's going to be a while before we're enjoying pizzas from it and it DEFINITELY does not come with such an amazing view, but I'm enjoying the building process as I anticpate the food it will cook. Thanks for the tease!

3 words - Big Green Egg. So fun to barbecue, smoke, roast, and we've even used a pizza stone and converted it to a 600 degree pizza oven. Only problem is we can only cook one pizza at a time.
