apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Portable Hot Tub: The Dutchtub

Put this on your roof. I first saw this thing at ICFF in 2006, and I loved it. And given that it's the time to get outdoors, it's time to bust it out again and introduce any of you who haven't seen this thing...

Invented by Floris Schoonderbeek (b. 1979), the Dutchtub is a lightweight and portable hot tub that heats water the old fashioned way: with fire (and the fact that hot water rises). It is colorful, fun, effective and (to the best of our memory) doesn't cost a lot of money. And if you aren't quite ready to buy one and put it on the roof of your apartment building, you can even rent them first.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but having my arm hair singed by the roaring fire next to me would pretty much negate any hot tub induced relaxation.

It looks like a people cooker.

I had something like this when I was a kid only it was made out of a horse trough. Kind of a hippie's version of the hot tub. Pretty much the same design though.

i met some people promoting this thing at an event last year, and they were pretty nuts (as you can imagine). it looks cool, but i wonder which person is going to get out of the hot tub and rekindle the fire?

Damn I love it! Portable and you dont have to plug it in!
It would be so cool to have one, as a renter, and take it wherever you went
Running in and out of a hottub is unplesant when its -30C, regardless of what you have to do, so if you have to rekindle the fire you probably want to go in and dry off first!

I thought it might make a great gift for my dad's 60th but it's still $6000 $650 for the cover! I love it though.

Amount of water used? Pollution? I thought this was green month.

Okay, but it is pretty damn cool.

Anything that looks this wacky has my vote. Just knowing it's out there somewhere as a real object makes me happy.

From the people that brought us the Dutch oven, I can see the connection. But at $6000, it'll burn you one way or another.

...and the "ash tray", the round metal pan that goes under the coiled fire pipes, is $125!

I guess your memory has failed you in this case, because everything about this (admitedly cute) contraption seems waaaay overpriced.
