Treehouse Bed by Michelle Ivankovic

I was out in Los Angeles last month and stopped into Kelly van Patter's Kellygreen Design in Silverlake. Kellygreen is a green design store that has some very creative, cool and attractive home home furnishings, tools and accessories. The one item that really stood out to me, however, was this four poster bed, the Treehouse Bed, and the DIY headboard beyond it...

The Treehouse Bed is a beautifully crafted birch four poster bed, that preserves the raw outside of one birch tree, splits it into four and then attaches itself to the four corners to create the "raw forest" bed. The contrast between the natural barky outside and the finely cut, sanded and sealed inside surfaces is mesmerizing. The wood posts are certified sustainably forested in Ontario. The Baltic birch plywood side boards are premium grade furniture ply from Russia.

Designed by Michelle Invankovic at Umbra, I was also able to get in touch with Michelle, and have her relay her inspiration for her bed:

michelle.jpg"The inspiration for this project was to highlight the parts of the wood that are normally discarded in the finished product. Somehow detritus always tells such an important story. It's about creating a direct link between the source tree and the final piece which are completely disassociated in our day to day lives.

Although we are constantly surrounded by wood products, we rarely think of trees when we see a wooden table or bed. Additionally I'm always inspired to re-think conventional methods of manufacture. Despite working as a fine woodworker for years, putting lumber into the kiln to dry with the bark intact was not only a new challenge for me, but also the Canadian saw mill that processed the lumber for us.

As time passes the bark continues to curl away from the posts, some of it may even chip off, the bed changes, that's nature.

Simply put: it's a reminder that wood comes from trees."

Thanks, Michelle!

And then there's the headboard. A simple design idea, Kelly uses reclaimed lumber carefully mounted to the wall and endcut to neatly frame the bed to form a headboard. This is a great, DIY idea and one that anyone could copy, using any number of woods or materials. The trick, of course, is finding good wood, and you're probably not going to find it at your local lumber yard. Reclaimed wood can always be found locally, but here are some leads to get you thinking:

Very cool! The headboard is a great idea. The cardboard moose head is fun too - I've seen those at http://www.cardboardsafari.com.
All neat stuff!

It looks cheap. Sorry, but I wouldn't think about one of these.

I'm going to go with hideous on this one. I agree with Snugglitas - it looks cheap or unfinished - I wouldn't want to bang my arm or head on the sharp edges of the logs!

Can anyone else picture Mamma from Adam Sandlers movie "The Waterboy" sleeping in this bed?

Don't want to knock people creativity but each to their own right?
