I love these AT Europe posts. Of course I love this one especially, because I'm a fan (and an owner) of Murphy beds.

Are these affordable? Are there US suppliers?

I like that last one--you even get a little bonus wall for privacy.

These are great, you could actually use them in the home office area as a spare bed for overnight guests too.

These beds are produced by CLEI in Italy. They also have distribution in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. For North America, Manny Machado carries them in Canada or contact CLEI Italy for direct imports to the USA.

You can write to export@clei.it if interested in US exports. In France, the armoire-lit starts at 1600 euros.

I have mixed feelings about these units. They really limit the way a small apartment space can be used. When I was shopping for a murphy bed, I saw a unit here in NYC....some place near 3rd Av & in the 30's....with a sofa built into it. Initally it seemed like a good idea. However, the quality of the sofa was poor, it was uncomfortable to sit on and came in very limited choices of fabric. I ended up with a sleeper sofa and feel that I made the best possible choice.

To Mason's point, can anyone vouch for comfort of these Murphy beds?

These beds are gorgeous! I looked at one a few years back here in NYC (east 30s - sorry don't recall shop) and they are EXPENSIVE. I think that for a rental apartment it would be too costly but If you are putting money into a coop or condo that you own and space is limited it would be worth the investment.

Lee Valley Tools make the workings for a wall bed. I have one - queen size with lots of storage above. It was a custom design and I love it.

Let me telling you my experience.
I bought in dec 2006 the ATOLL model, by CLEI (the one on the last picture) => 6.200euros
I am french, living in Paris, in a small appartment and I wanted a murphy bed in order to sleep, with confort, in my living room
After looking for a cheap solution, I found 3 suplliers : two frenchs and one italian (CLEI). Without hesitation, Clei is the best in terms of quality, colors choice, design.... and unfortunately for the price too. You also can give your own fabric to Clei if you want to associate the color with the rest of your furnitures.
First I found some ones at 3000 euros for the cheapest but i didn't feel it. After making my decision for the Clei's one, I tried to negociate the price without success. The french supplier "la maison du convertible" is the only one in france (they have an exclusivity). I wasn't happy to learn that, my purse too.
One year later, I can tell you that combined to my 100% latex pirrelli 2m*1,6m*17mm mattress (approx 6.5ft*5.2ft*6,69 inches), I have completely NO regret. Remind that the mattress thikness is quite important and that only Clei offers you until 18mm (7,08 inches) thickness with a so thin armoire 35cm (13,77 inches) from the wall
Latest thing : The bed is not included in the price so don't hesitate to buy it separately.

Sorry for my english, for better understanding :
Please read : "la maison du convertible" is the only retailer in france (not the only supplier) for Clei
