One of the most eye-catching elements of Nathalie & Keith's Paris apartment in a converted factory in the 11th arrondissement is their kitchen and dining room -- especially the faded oriental rug on the kitchen floor.

I can already hear some of you screaming something about "hygiene." And while it's true that it may not be wise for some to put a hard-to-clean carpet on their kitchen floor, it works beautifully in this space. The rug adds warmth and balance to the hard-lined, modern, minimalist kitchen. And it helps unite the open kitchen with the dining room, furnished with a massive antique stone table surrounded by vintage Gio Ponti chairs, plus a modern light fixture and Nathalie's sculpture of a giant Parisian light switch lacquered red.
The motto of this story? Don't be afraid to decorate your kitchen as you would any other room in your house, especially if it opens onto another room.

Interesting...I've been considering a rug in the kitchen for a while now, mostly to cover up linoleum while I (not so patiently) wait to put in a new floor....I worry that it wouldn't look as nice without a wood floor underneath.

I have a rug similar to that in my kitchen and it works well. Of course it is necessary to clean it all of the time. But it is nice not to have cold tile under my feet early in the morning.

my objection is not the hygiene but safty!
Depending on the layout of the kitchen (walk-through) it might become a tripping hazard. Especially as some people are allways in a hurry when it comes to cooking, others are chaotic, others have kids /pets. In my experience these anti-slide nets do not work completly (on wood floors).
Nevertheless i like the homy touch balancing with the steel cabinets.

We have an oriental rug very much like that one in our kitchen. Ours isn't as close to the work spaces, but it's really similar. I have a very simple, somewhat blocky butcher block table and white orbit chairs in the kitchen, and the countertops are granite, and I like the contrast with the rug. I don't know that I would put the rug anywhere else in the apartment, but it kinda works there.

we used to have one in a former kitchen, and it was nice. We never found it to be a tripping hazard, but I would be careful not to put it too close to a stove.

I think I'm going to go find an oriental for my kitchen now...

There's a nice little Hamaden in my kitchen, an auction find.

Okay, been one to cook and bake, this doesn't look like a high production kitchen. It is simple and perfect for 2 people.
Therefore, I love love love the idea of incorporating the dining area style into the kitchen. Beautiful. Softens the industrial look, too.
I have used a 5x7 thow rug in my kitchen, albeit washable. Such a cozy feel on your feet in the morning or the winter.
Great idea.

We have an antique kilim from Iran on our kitchen floor. Makes the kitchen awesome, in my opinion. Maybe not practical, but beautiful... like using the "good" china everyday:)

My mum always had a rug in her kitchen... well, she still does. Yes, you have to wash it fairly often - but isn't that better than cold floors, potentially ugly tile (I live in a rental, the tile IS pretty ugly), and any crumbs or anything being on the floor getting stuck on your bare feet? I don't know, I just like the warm feel that a rug gives the kitchen.

I wash very often the rug in my kitcken, in the living room I have a very old oriental one but I would cry if I will see some food falling down there.
