Matt from Amsterdam writes:
I have been living in Amsterdam for 2 years and just bought my first apartment that I am now renovating. There is one piece I have longed for since my first apartment in Tallahassee 15 years ago.
It’s the classic armchair you can imagine in some Montana ranch, you know the big leather cocoon that envelopes you completely, allowing you to come out for air every 3 days or so...
Looking around the web, I can find a few examples similar to what’s in my head: The Levenger Bomber Jacket chair (pictured above), or the Pottery Barn Pearce or Manhattan. But in my searches around town I can only find the modern European chair: terse, functional, blah. Do you have any ideas on where I can find my reminder of home?
Dear Matt,
AT Europe has come up empty on this one, apart from the suggestion that you forget your idea of recreating American comfort in the Netherlands and instead seek out a local equivalent in Amsterdam's flea markets.
Another idea is to check European ebay in the hope that you may find an expat castoff that can be shipped to you in Amsterdam. And Ruth in Amsterdam suggests placing an ad in the English-language Amsterdam Weekly.
Anyone else?

Matt - are you sure you'll fit this into your Amsterdam home? We found a great chair while we lived in Holland, but couldn't get it up the stairs to our apartment to save our lives. Back to the curb it went...

Have you tried the Google search:
http://tinyurl.com/2j8avh
That should give you the Google maps search for leather furniture in/near Amsterdam. And it also gives you things you may not want, like descriptions of furniture in hotel lobbies. Ha!
This one isn't too far off:

This is at a shop that is open only Saturday:

I don't know what's with that seat part, it seems to sort of slide out? Anyway, you might want to check it out for comfort, it could be very nice. That I got from this site:
http://www.21stcenturyamsterdam.com/amsterdam-shopping-guide.html
This is funny, this footstool is made of feet:
http://www.21stcenturyamsterdam.com/footstools.html
It would go with those hand soaps. Ha!
Oops, try this link, for listings of stores, rather than just that map:
http://www.21stcenturyvillage.com/amsterdam_dovetaildirectory.html
You can check this site, they seem to have a nail head fetish, but there are a couple of squishy leather chairs there:
http://www.ludwigamsterdam.com/
I don't read/speak whatever that language is, but click on Meubelin, then on Stoelen, then on Clubs.
Also, browse this listing:
http://amsterdam.meubelen-nederland.nl/
That's where the Ludwig place came from.
Even IKEA has a couple squishy looking chairs in leather:
http://www.ikea.com/nl/nl/catalog/categories/range/10367/10696/
I know you want the LOOK of a certain chair. But the description of how it FEELS will be more important once you're sitting in it. So that is one idea to start with, sit in everything. Sit in every chair in every store that you come across.
I have been pleasantly surprised or sorely disappointed by how something LOOKS vs. how it actually FEELS to sit in it.

Oh Matt, I hear ya. (and totally empathize) I also lust after this chair and live in Holland.
I live in Den Bosch and we have some fantastic furniture stores here. (some stuff I've seen has a definate American-y feel) I'll keep my eyes open for you.

I liked a shop in Amsterdam very much: It only opens on Saturday's, but has a lot of great lights. (Vintage from the 50's till late 70's). Much more in the shop then on the website! Cheap for real design and great service.
