Post from Paris: The BHV

(Welcome to Kristin, Parisian resident, who is testing the waters with us of an AT:Europe and blogging all that's good in Paris. Let us know what you think!)

This is the Holy Grail of Parisian home improvement. Since 1856, Le Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville, across the street from city hall, has been the most democratic of Parisian department stores.

There is something for literally everyone here and Saturday pilgrimages are a Parisian tradition. Jacquard napkins? Lighting fixtures for every budget and taste, strikingly organized by color? Tassels for your made-to-order curtains? The perfect shade of paint? An appliance for even the tiniest of kitchens?

It’s one-stop shopping to kit out your pied-à-terre or just a great source for domestic souvenirs with Parisian flair -- linen-lined breadbaskets, French sheets, wine cellar accoutrements, every kitchen utensil known to man.

But the real goldmine is the basement -- a Parisian answer to Home Depot that is part hardware store and part inspiration. There is a gadget for every domestic conundrum plus modern and vintage reproduction hardware and a dizzying selection of solutions for the home and garden.

If you feel overwhelmed, take refuge in Café Bricolo (short for bricolage, the French word for DIY), designed to look like an old French atelier with vintage accessories, distressed walls and wooden tables stacked with French decorating books and magazines.

aaa I saw my favourite lamp in pic (in the back) # 9 :-(((
I wonder if this is a reproduction or the real thing??

Blogging from Paris??? After going national, why not go international.

I forwarded AT link to my friends in overseas long time ago, and they already became addicted.

I am sure it will be appreciated to get a different perspective, different environment.

I will look forward to it.

I'm going to Paris in October - I'm adding this to my list of things to see and do.

Kristen, I love your writing, I hope that AT will pick up Europe full-time!

I love BHV. Whenever I go to Paris I always wind up there. Usually it is because I forgot my electrical adapter...but then I wind up buying something colorful & fun for the home or myself while I'm there. They have a pretty amazing umbrella selection there.

What do I think? I think Kristen is a talented writer with original ideas and a fresh take. Just what the site needs. She makes me wish your new features where all working, enabling me to save this post to my favorites page. I've enjoyed all of her posts and hope to see more.

LOVE everything about this post -- it's been a dream to visit Paris and until I am able to do so, this feature will be a nice interim treat. Kristin, who has outstanding writing ability, is an outstanding additional to AT!

This place reminds me of a similar store in tokyo called tokyu hands. I always wish we had a place similar to these in the NY metro area.

I stayed right near Hotel de Ville (on the rue Vielle du Temple, actually), and had no clue about Le Bazar. Darn! Hotel de Ville is one of my husband's favorite buildings in Paris. (Lori2, now you'll have to go to Le Bazar!)

This is perfect. I am going to Paris next month. I want to know all the great local Parisian goodies. I am particularly looking for a modern alarm clock.

Also, do you know the best way to get the treasures home? Post? What are the Customs rules? What are the rules/costs for sending stuff home?

We will be staying part of the visit in the Marais area--so any great shops you see there would be great to know.

Thanks! Angela

I love that shot at the top of this post - all grey with the touches of green and the blue umbrellas. I love these Paris posts too.

It's probably my favorite store in Paris. They had the perfect bathroom sink but I couldn't get it back home... so disappointing. They also have the most wonderful sleek, slender appliances. The kind that are perfect for our wee NYC apartments (only we can't buy them here! sob!) They once had a beautiful kitchenette.....okay I'm beginning to rhapsodize but it's all so wonderful there. Treat yourself to soething packable and unusual like the door knockers:)

Loving the Paris posts too, btw. I have a four hour layover there in a couple of weeks... now I'm tempted to change my flight for a longer stay!

Can Kristin post on Paris every day? Please?

I have been searching for a beautiful, old-world letter opener. I am envisioning a handle in Mother of Pearl and silver. I am thinking Paris is the right place to find such an item. Any suggestions where?

I am also interested in hearing more about Paris flea markets.

Fiona, indeed I will - Let me know if I can pick anything up for you!

Thanks to everyone for your interest and encouragement. Angela and Lori 2 -- I will be sure to address your queries in upcoming posts (a bit too much to cover here). Holly -- you have a faithful reader in Paris!

This just makes me want to pack up my things and move to Paris. Like tomorrow.
Kudos to Kristin. Let's see more of Paris! AT: Paris is a brilliant idea. Once we move that far, I can start suggesting AT:Istanbul... That is where antique meets modern truly. Like literally.
