The wooden gypsy caravan has developed something of a cult in France, where people plant them in their backyards to use as guest rooms, playhouses and getaways. And for those who can't afford one, don't have the yard space or for the neo-nomad who has grown tired of the standard hotel bed, gypsy caravans are rentable at campgrounds all over France...

These photos are from the blog Dans Ma Roulotte, which chronicles the redecoration of this classic wooden caravan, which was dolled up with a green ceiling and fuschia paint -- and eventually painted blue.

remember the gypsy caravan in the wizard of ox? i absolutely adored it as a small child and regularly announced to my mother that i was going to (a) run away to the gypsies so that i could live in one, (b) run away to the gypsies just because, and (c) ask santa for one for christmas.
none of these dreams ever came true, of course, which is unfortunate... nor did my other dream of living in a houseboat, but there's still time for that one.

We have a gypsy infestation down here in Memphis. I was in the store the other day and the shoe guy goes....those are all gypsies...they come in and ask for a shoe to try on...and then take off with the box. Maybe France can loan us those nice caravans to deport them somewhere else.

Do they come with "how to work a con" instructions?

The Romani people seem to be one of the last groups that a western racist can still openly despise and slander without being thought a bigot in polite society.

Way to represent Memphis there, LittleRock. I'd write a longer response to your comment but AT probably has a filter to keep out words like the ones I'd use. Oh alright, I'll see what happens: fascist asshole.

I thought this was a decorating and design forum?
On that note - I love this. Katiebug - it reminds me of the covered wagons and houseboats that I also wanted to live in when I was a kid.

Sorry...gotta post again, this is making me nostalgic. Our house growing up was off of a major highway and we had small guest cottages in back that my parents rented out (the Catskills...). Whenever a "Knight of the Road" stopped, my Dad would settle them into a cottage, give them clean clothes and my Mom would make a huge dinner for them and then the next day they'd see them off with a pinic lunch and a few bucks. This happened at least once a month during the summer. We never had a single problem - ever. I love that my Dad called them Knights of the Road.

Beautiful story I LOVE UPSTATE. Thanks for the pallet cleanser. I was needing one after a couple of the other posts.

I just made a comment. I'm sorry you think I'm a fascist. I just don't agree with people that steal and cheat from honest people that are trying to make a living. It's become a real problem in our community. Maybe the gypsy's in your parts are kind, caring and compassionate people.

Littlerock, you made a statement that generalized people of one particular heritage are all the same, which is very racist. There are people that steal in all cultures, not just the one. There are no doubt very honest good gypsy's in Memphis, I suspect you just have not looked.
I completely agree with chacowhacko, and upstates store is so cool!

LittleRock-- no one objects to "I hate people who steal and cheat from honest people who are trying to make a living". In fact, I'm pretty sure most people here would agree with you.
The problem comes from sterotyping Group X as consisting entirely of "people who steal and cheat" or whatever else.
It's the difference between saying "I hate racists" and "I hate southern whites-- they're all racists". The first sentance most people I know would agree with. The second is itself racist, and highly objectionable. And remains objectionable even if one has, in fact, encountered multiple southern white racists-- just because Set A and Set B overlap doesn't mean that it's appropriate to assume that everyone from Set A is also a member of Set B.
You may have already realized this, and were just pretending to miss the point because it was convenient for you to do so, but just in case.

That is so cool. I love the detail in the woodwork.

We have Catholic Gypsies here in the South, I think their heritage is generally Irish.
Anyway for a cool show about said Southern Gypsies, check out "The Riches" starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. Awesome show.
