apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The "Unflaggingly Enthusiastic" Book is Out!

2-28-cover234.jpgApartment Therapy: The Eight Step Cure is out today! That means that after a year of writing and months of beating the drum, you can finally get your hands on a copy, and we can all begin our online Cure next month.

It also means that the reviews are coming in (we are not putting a bag over our head yet). Here's a clip below from Publisher's Weekly that can't help but be grudgingly won over, despite our "psycho-babble." We're not sure they understand just exactly how psycho we are about what we do. They should check out the rest of you here on the website.

"The author's 'eight-week cure' will pull you out of a decorating rut." Glamour - April 2006

"New York-based interior designer Gillingham-Ryan is out to prove that even the dreariest, no-view walk-up can be transformed into a cozy urban oasis using his "eight-step home cure." (Publishers Weekly continues below)

The unflaggingly enthusiastic author asks readers to "listen" to their apartments-appraising what he refers to as the bones, breath, heart and head of the space-before determining ways to streamline. Despite the decorator's forays into psycho-babble, his advice proves practical as he teaches readers how to determine a makeover budget, de-clutter, liberate themselves from a lifetime of accumulated possessions and choose paint hues.

Gillingham-Ryan's belief that the right lighting can "create warmth and visual movement" leads to more helpful advice on choosing the right fixtures, the different types of light and the virtues of high-end candles.

No housing revival would be complete without a party, so Gillingham-Ryan shares the most festive recipes in his arsenal, including "Orange Pant's Deadly Simple Chocolate Mousse" and "Margaritas to Make Men and Women Giggle."

While the author's ideas may not break new ground, his ebullient, can-do attitude will appeal to readers interested in, but intimidated by, an apartment overhaul."

Publisher's Weekly - March 2006

"In this wonderfully clear-cut guide, Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan prescribes a totally doable eight-step program for making your house a haven. His holistic approach, easy-to-do lists and floor plans--plus tips like buying fresh flowers a "gift" to your space--adhere to the domino doctrine: Home should make you happy."

Domino Magazine - April 2006

"Design blogger Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of apartmenttherapy.com shares his secrets on how to transform an apartment into a stylish and healthy home. There's even a questionnaire on personal taste and energy flow."

Time Style and Design - Spring 2006

I'm considering going down to my local independent bookseller and demanding that they pull my reserved copy off the shelf NOW -- not at 5 p.m., but NOW -- but alas, they remember their regular customers and are likely to think that rude.

Amazon says my copy is on the way. Congrats Max! Can't wait to settle in for a good read (and thereafter, a good de-cluttering!)

My copy's on the way, too, which means it's time to take some books over to the thrift shop.

According to Amazon, mine's in transit, along with some Ultralounge and Bill Evans and Maria Muldaur CDs for background music.

Congratulations, Maxwell, on the new "baby". I bet you will always remember March 28th as the day your first book came out.

Big stuff! We old-timers are all quite proud of what you and Oliver and Sara Kate have accomplished. Your small pebbles have cast huge ripples into so many apartments.

Thank you.

Hey! My apartment is in the smallest/coolest contest. Does that mean I won a copy of the book? When will it arrive? I know I'm not going to win any DWR stuff - but I eagerly await my copy of the book!

P.S. I'd echo Anne's comment (though I've only been here a few months), but she said it perfectly.

Congrats to you on your big day!!!!!!!!!

I'm enjoying the book. I didn't get a chance to start reading it until this morning. But it really is a very easy read. The design and layout seem to flow very nicely, and it's very interesting and really a pleasure.

I hope it does very, very well, because if the rest of it fulfills the promise on what I've read so far, it really seems like a very valuable and humane tool that really seems to come from a very organic and thoughtful place.

It's read-on-the-bus size! How delightful!

(No, the independent bookseller did not ever pull my pre-ordered copy. I complained to the owner before going to Borders.)

Hooray! I'm enjoying my copy so far.

But is it me? The book says we can print out the worksheets from the website, but I can't find the link. (I did search for "worksheet".)

help?
