"So far, I've tossed that old stereo. I'm sure it was a simple repair, but I haven't taken it to be serviced in nine years. The verdict was in on that one. Also, I cleaned all my dishes (y'know my kitchen is a wreck) and have been cooking dinner daily. I'm even having cereal before work. And a small box of catalogs/ flyers/ magazines went out to the curb.
Week 2 flowers are a blooming!" - Lady J
Welcome to Spring and what a good time to be Curing. I'm back from the morning's outings and love reading through all your progress. Really good, but I sense that some of you may be slipping off. Don't forget that I'd like to you give us all an Update at least once a week. Even if you THINK you've done nothing, update us. We've got miles to go yet.
Meanwhile I have made this Strength Machine right here so that you can all share your strength during the journey.
As for you, Andrea, I love that you posted your whole survey and, I have to admit, it's hard to decode without meeting you and seeing your home. But since you asked, me I'm going to take a stab at it. Forgive me if I miss completely.
Drawing from the strong, intelligent women and men you chose as actors, your quick wit, your photograph and the fact that you say your home is unfinished, I suspect a person who (while very balanced) leads with your head and follows with your heart. My guess is that you have high standards and often worry about taking on a project if you can't meet them - hence the "unfinished" part.
This says cool to me, which would mean that your project is to finish, insert warm color, to cook more (warm) and to really get your home ready for guests at the end (if not sooner) of the Cure.
Remember, that whether you are warm or cool, that represents your strength as well as your weakness and the object is not to "change" yourself (impossible) but to "balance" yourself.
As for painting your bedframe, I think the can of paint that you used on your door sounds really good. It's a great color and the spray will go on much better than a brush. Also, if you prime it with a white spray paint first, your red will go further and may even get a brighter look to it (like the Anthropologie bed). Best of luck and show us how it comes out!
Alana in Canada's lovely living room. She wants help on painting the trunk/coffee table. Alana, you definitely want to add contrast, so you're right, going green won't do it. I'd say your room is tending warm, but is has very little strong warm in it yet: the orange throw and the red pillow. I'd go with a nice deep Chinese Red for the trunk and put a nice thick piece glass on top of it for a better surface. You can help her by
"voting" here.
This Week's Assignment: Last week you got inspired, this week you go to work. In the Deep Treatment you are going to focus on the kitchen. You will declutter and clean your kitchen from the top down and then cook a meal you actually like! There are other smaller tasks as well, such as filtering your tap water and planning a housewarming, but the kitchen is your target.
In the One Room Workout, you will probably be focusing on another room in your home. At this point, your task is to arrange the room on paper to best meet your needs. Additionally, it is time to take your inspiration and crystallize it into your vision for the project. Remember, once you have a clear port to sail towards, the trip becomes much easier.

Hi all,
End of week 2.0! Homework complete. It is a bedroom, so no need to list activities, right?
Floor plan did not change, due to outlets and behemoth furniture. Our vision? To walk into our bedroom and smile.
Shopping list: Curtain rods (1/2 the order has arrived), curtains (also, 1 of two pairs complete), new end table (check)., new lamps (check.), area rug (still up for suggestions), duvet (ugh...wish I could get Dwell, may have to settle for the Organic white West Elm cover), bedskirt, art for walls, lcd tv (still debating). closet doors.
I have posted the curtain progress and the removal of the carpet on my flickr site. I hope to have the whole carpet removed this weekend and maybe the curtains on one window.

For some reason I was super motivated after work yesterday to clean out the garage. It took a couple hours and we filled up the back of our Xterra twice with recycling and donating not to mention the stuff we are selling online. I think it's insane how much stuff was crammed in their. I still want to give away some more but since we are going to be moving from our apartment into a house in the next year I want to hold on to some it until after the move. I'm going to post pictures this afternoon on my blog and flickr. Unfortunately I don't have a before but I do have the after and the two cars full of stuff!

ug, the garage. We have to do ours, too, but we're waiting for the snow to meltand the ground to dry up first.
jen64--I'm so impressed by your curtains! I love pleated drapes and giving that formality to that fabric is pure genius. Beautiful sewing job, too. I'm jealous. It'll be a room worth waiting for!
trilobyte, I'm behind too. Defrosting an upright chest freezer is daunting.

I've been super-busy since yesterday morning. I've re-organized my basement storage, took a carload to the recycling center this morning, then i went to Ikea where i found a shelving for only 13 Swiss francs (= ca. 13$ at the actual exchange rate ) for the basement, Finished the basement and installed the new BESTA sideboard which i also purchased today at Ikea. Vacuumed. Now i'll just finish this comment, list two pieces of furniture for sale and then i'm going to prepare myself dinner ( asparagus, bresaola, sauce hollandaise...yummy !). Tomorrow and Monday i'll play it a bit more cool, after all, it's Easter weekend with four days off ;-))

Oops, I got so over-eager that I commented on the LA Cure site! :)
We New York Cure folks are chattier, it seems...
I haven't had a lot of time to devote to the kitchen, but had done work a few months back weeding stuff out, so it isn't SO bad...
The fridge is cleaned out and happy, and at least half of my kitchen looks quite beautiful!

I'm going great guns!
We completely remodeled our kitchen this past fall/winter, so there isn't a whole lot that needs to be done there. (If you're interested, you can see my slideshow here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/74041096@N00/sets/72157604173627122/show/) I cleaned the refrigerator out and I cleaned all the shelves in it and it looks great!
The one remaining thing we have left to do in our kitchen is to paint the old cabinet doors to go in the pantry. I stripped them all yesterday and put the first coat of paint on today. I'll finish painting them tomorrow and we'll install them tomorrow afternoon. I'm counting this as one of the things I'm fixing this week.
I've also been decluttering a ton and I've picked out paint colors for the bedroom, since I'm over the teal color that we painted it a few years ago. I also patched up some holes and imperfections in the drywall in preparation for painting sometime soon. I also bought a pretty quilt for the bedroom and I'm very happy with it.
I'll be blogging about more of this at: http://ihavetohaveit.blogspot.com

I'm just starting the Cure! Got derailed last fall after being dumped, and had a slow start this time, but yesterday I got rid of a lamp, shredded a huge pile of paper, created an outbox, washed all the windows in the apt., vacuumed, did laundry and dishes, and scrubbed the bathroom from top to bottom. (The xl chocolate frappucinos work wonders...). Goal for today/the rest of the weekend is finish shredding paper, sweep and wash all the floors, get flowers, and start feeding the outbox. And take the before pictures.

i had big plans to tackle my kitchen today. then, well, umm . . . i sort of overslept and then i found out that there was a huge pillow fight in union square, so i did that instead. but! i did buy some pretty flowers for my apartment at the farmers market. and i totally plan on working on the kitchen tomorrow. i promise!!

Maxwell, I'm sending you a big cyber kiss!
Thank you so much for calling my silly old living room "lovely"--and for suggesting chinese red. I wanted that colour YEARS ago....back when the dining room was first painted red....but I chickened out. And it's just as well, as I probably would have chosen something too blue. I feel vindicated by the suggestion.
If I hadn't walked 50 thousand miles in a city park today hunting for easter eggs with the kids, I'd be painting NOW. As it is, I'll have to wait for the store to open Monday, if it is open Monday.

Today I wasn't so focused. We deep cleaned the dining room, the kitchen, the bathroom, and the living room.
Deeeeeep cleaned. Like vacuum the cat fur off the velvet curtains clean.
We sorted all the old magazines, sorted Domino and ReadyMade (can't toss those), took all the kitchen stuff out of the open shelving and wiped it all down, found a place for all that lose end clutter or tossed it, dusted and vacuumed everything. I cleared out, organized, and wiped down the credenza. The woman who owned the house before us was a heavy smoker and I'm still finding surfaces that are nicotine coated. Yick!
I wanted to stay with the program, but once I got started and everyone took a space, it just sort of took on it's own agenda. I'm so proud of my fiance for getting into it.
Our "open house" will most likely be the night before our wedding (which is on 6-7-08). We'll have cocktails with all the folks who are coming into town.
Off to enjoy a lovely pomegranate martini in my fresh, clean, clutter-free living room. I hope all of you are enjoying this feeling! It's so liberating and good! Whew!
Cheers!! Thanks for the good excuse to get this stuff underway!

I started my day by forgiving myself for being tired on weeknights, a late riser on weekends and generally lollygagging. I'm a night person and that's when I do my work. Somewhat limiting, but there it is.
I took a large box to UPS and shipped some items to mom that were visually weighing on me for a few months. (All those other boxes were broken down and tossed in Week 0.) And I scrubbed up the kitchen, including inside the stove and the burner pieces. I tried to retrieve the microplane grater that fell behind the stove two years ago. It's stuck behind the gas pipe, so maybe I'll just buy a new one. In the meantime I Swiffered out the other crap from previous tenants and dust farm that is under there.
Now off to the bathroom while the dishes drain.

I'm sort of curing at my own pace due to the fact that I started getting rid of stuff a few weeks ago when we had storage cabinets built in our home office. Today we spent all afternoon hanging new drapes in the bedroom which makes a HUGE difference. It feels like a whole new room! New mattress is coming later in the week, and we're ordering our new bed frame this week too. Have to put up some before and after pictures on the Flickr group, though.. hope I'll have a chance to do that tomorrow.. the in-laws are coming for brunch which will be excitement enough for the day, I think. Reading about everyone's progress is encouraging! Cheers.

I'm going to be playing catch-up next week due to my busy week and my trip out of town. I got a TON of work done in the kitchen, my pantry cabinets and freezer are totally organized and clean. I am purging cookbooks and bringing the castoffs in to work to see who wants to take them. I'm putting some unused kitchen gadgets outside - a bread machine, a food chopper.... I have really good space in my kitchen, it's just not utilized very well!
I already filter my water (Brita faucet filter) so that's one to tick off the list. I didn't have time to cook this week, but next week I plan to practice some of the dishes I want to serve at my party, which I'm hoping will be a tapas & wine bash where I can show off what I learned to cook when I was in Spain last summer!

I got a whole lot done in the kitchen, and packed up two boxes worth of stuff for craigslist or goodwill. HOWEVER, last night, around 5:00am, I woke up to the sound of rain... in my bathroom. A pipe had burst of the fifth floor, raining down to my place on the third floor. I lost electricity in half of my apartment due to blown fuses, a number of floor tiles cracked, and due to the holiday weekend, my super think the water won't be back on until Tuesday.
But everyone, please say a big thank you to my fabulous BF who, without hesitation took me in, and said I'm welcome to stay as long as I need to.
Now if I can just convince him to clean the bathroom so I can catch up...
So I guess I'll just move on to, well, ANY OTHER ROOM. ;)

Wow, hmr... good luck with all of the repairs, your situation is NOT fun, but it sounds like you have a good attitude (and a great BF).
I'm behind on posting and photographing, but I got a lot done since this week was my spring break... 5 days with nothing to do is a RARE treat. The bedroom is painted a lovely grey, I built a new seat for our kitchen bench (making it deep enough for comfortable sitting), and I broke out the previously-unused-wedding-gift pasta maker to make my own ravioli. I even tried the no-knead bread from The Kitchn- definitely try it if you haven't yet, it was so easy.

Thanks for the confirmation, AT! I'm a bit uncertain on how to handle hard construction under cedar planks like these. Does anyone have experience in this regard (final photo from above)?
We've had houseguests since Wednesday so Curing progress is a bit slow at the moment, but our lighting improvement and a kitchen surface cleaning have done wonders for our kitchen. Our houseguests and visitors are remarking positively.

Well, I'm not actually doing the cure - except reading this site through at least the last 3 cures whilst ploughing through endless DIY projects, maintenance and make-do's. But today, I am more half way through the four day public holiday; nothing is finished - about 5 tasks will have to remain unfinished; my sander has just died; the entire flat is in chaos and covered in red dust; I ache, my hands throb and I have guests arriving on Thursday.
Oh and the contractor who was to have repaired the water damage to the bedroom ceiling from the bathroom in the flat above never showed.
That worked. I feel SO much better now. And at least I didn't take a before picture - it might have tipped me over the edge... ;-)

my major progress this week was talking to family about taking some items for me. the kitchen remains in limbo due to still putting together furniture and me being stubborn about asking for help. (I'll get over that this week, I swear)
Since i'm curing and moving in, I'm looking at my progress partially in terms of the number of boxes I bring to recycling. I'm trying to do one a day during the week and more on the weekend. In the past, I've just put things in places willy-nilly and this time I'm trying to be deliberate about placement. It takes longer, but should result in a happier apartment.

Wig, I've been coveting wood flooring for my bathroom, too. The idea that I had was to just put down wood deck tiles. Because they're intended to withstand the elements outdoors, I figure they'll do okay in my bathroom, too. There's a whole compilation of sources in AT's "Top 10: Wood Deck Tiles".
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/top-ten/top-10-wood-deck-tiles-024438
As for my Curing: I had gotten started last Fall and then got derailed. I did a bunch of cleaning out of the kitchen cupboards then, so mainly, I just need to clean, which I'm doing today.
I picked up some of that cushion-y shelf liner to put in the cabinets with glasses, plates and in the silverware drawer. My kitchen has these old metal cabinets (probably from the 30s) and the banging and clanking was really getting to me. I put that in this morning.
I'm also accumulating a small list of things I'd like for the kitchen to polish it off: A new trash can, a cabinet organizer for large flat pans & trays, and some way to cover or contain the large pots, bowls and extra set of dishes that I keep on the top of the cabinets.
I thought about just plain old padded dish storage containers, but really, they are so 1963 -- and not in a good way. The vinyl is an upside since the top of my cabinets gets disgustingly greasy (old kitchen, no range hood), and it would be easy to clean.
White plastic storage tubs aren't much better.
I'm also going try to find a couple of small flowering plants to put in some small containers I already have to brighten up the window sill.

I've mostly emptied my outbox. It's not very big because I am totally addicted to getting rid of random stuff from my apartment & do it all year long.
Last week's clothing swap allowed me to ditch a TON of stuff.
I also have researched & recruited a knowledgeable friend to install the yet-to-purchased ceiling fan in my bedroom.
Last week's flowers are still good - not wilted at all. On a random side note, my boyfriend & I noticed a yucky odor (like sulfur) was coming from some bamboo i have - last week I changed the water & rinsed/trimmed the roots, but that algae in there came back. And stinks. So the bamboo has been relocated to the window box area.
It feels like I haven't done that much this week. Nothing worth photographing, at least.

Looks like everyone has gotten a lot accomplished this weekend. I did the cure last Spring, but a year later find I need to do it again. I deep cleaned my Kitchen today, throwing out old food, organizing shelves and wiping everything down. My big purchase was to buy two wicker baskets to put on my kitchen island shelves. These are going to be my pantry, living in a small 1 bedroom, space is very limited.

Funny how such small changes can make a big difference. I'd love to take down the cabinet doors to sand off the paint drips and random spackle that were left by the last renters, but that will be a summer project so I can do it outdoors.

try a blue green fuzz covering the olive juice in a jar! Sick huh? Sicker is I haven't thrown it out yet.
I was planning on cleaning yesterday, but ended up crocheting and napping after a yoga-tastic week of over-exhaustion. Today I guiltily crocheted more and watched Gilmore Girls promising myself each episode would be the last before I deep cleaned the kitchen. (I thought I was too old for GG, even when it first came out... and now I find myself revisiting the early seasons for which I've forgotten the story lines. Ah, guilty pleasures!)
In any case, I did get a little bit done. Cleaned off the cluttered top of my fridge and edited all the things I stick on it with magnets (why do I need pictures of my cats, even the ones I don't have anymore, on my fridge? Somehow I can't put them elsewhere.... My progress has been to put them on the side of the fridge.)
I also cleaned my cabinet doors, and selected a bunch of miscelaneaous dishes and ramekins to bring to the salvation army. Perhaps before bed I'dll clean out the food in the fridge.. but I tend to prefer doing that on garbage day.
I'm not so good for following through on my didication to the cure. It's tough this thing, it's tough!

ooh boy, this week has been a doozy. Painting got started, then abruptly stopped -- no painters allowed in the building on Good Friday. This meant that my apartment was in chaos all weekend and that it likely won't be all done until Wednesday. That said, a few of the new light fixtures are up/in the process, which is exciting. I've been working on my kitchen for weeks now, cleaning out each corner and installing a clock/radio/stereo, paper towel holder, and toaster oven underneath my cabinets. oh, look! our picture's up there! that's exciting! it's good to know that maxwell votes for the red (i also like the red oxide paint color, so i'll add it to the style tray). the wall color (keep it? paint over the red on some walls? paint over it all?) is still up for debate so all thoughts are welcome :)
the big accomplishments for the weekend: added random stuff to the official outbox, washed the couch slip cover (and uhm, ripped it on a seam trying to put it back on...all the more reason to get a new couch!), got rid of the two long back pillows on the couch and rearranged the other pillows, mopped the hardwood floors w/ murphy's oil soap, had the family over for easter dinner, put down our new rug and trimmed the cats' claws to minimize damage as they will inevitably scratch at it.
we may have made a decision on curtains. since we really dislike the current white shutters, we would rather not put them back up when the windows are done. we had thought about somehow constructing a curved rod to go around the bay area, but that has always seemed intimidating - how to do the curved rod? how to get extremely long curtains custom made? i think i'm finally convinced that putting a tension rod across each window will look ok. and then we can buy standard-sized curtains. easy!

Well, I'm still behind, but I did clean out the fridge on Saturday and scrub a lot of the rust stains off of the bottom of the door. We are thinking of installing a pot rack in front of the locked door to my landlords space (it hasn't been opened since I moved in 7 years ago) and a magnetic knife holder next to the stove. That way we can get rid of the cheapo knife set that takes up counter space. I'm just wondering how high I would have to mount it so that it doesn't get too hot when I'm cooking.
Luckily I already filter my water and cook several meals every week, so at least I have that part done.

I had company in town from Thursday to this afternoon so not much Curing was done. I cast out my outbox, but didn't finish re-organizing my office closet yet. My kitchen was already in good shape so that didn't need too much attention anyway. I did manage to do some baking last night - maple oatmeal craisin cookies, so good and made the place smell great. Since I was having company, I did do normal tidying and really scrubbed down my bathroom and cleaned all the bed linens, including the bedskirt so that was good progress anyway.
I also got a new showerhead on a hose thingy so it will be easier to bathe my dog in my tiny shower. I need to get some drill bits to install it. Thanks for the bathroom inspiration shoutout. I still can't decide if I want to do the lighter blue or the deeper blue paint on the walls. Luckily bathroom week is still a bit a way.

Out of the Office: I am traveling so not working on my home right now (only in my dreams) but Maxwell asked to post so I'll start. I moved into my place a year ago and have been using principles from the cure continuously, but this is my first "official" cure. I am not so worried about missing the first couple of weeks because I am definitely a warm person and the most lived in room in my house is the kitchen, which happens to be quite clean at the moment. I have earth-friendly cleaning products and a landing strip under my belt also. My challenges and major points I want to tackle are:
-getting rid of lots of paper. Academic articles that I wish I had read, mostly. sigh.
-weeding through my files
-continuing to edit my bookshelves (most of this work is yet to be done, see point 1)
-organize my film-era photos?
-change the colors in the bathroom, just a shower curtain and mat change
-add storage space in the bathroom and kitchen
-spend a bit of time in my kitchen in the morning instead of run out in exasperation
-get into a regular cleaning schedule
my Ta Da! List (this is a FlyLady phrase, I can't take credit)
-got a new battery for my camera so I could post pics
-bought a new broom instead of the small annoying one I had
-exchanged a pottery barn frame that was waiting for months and framed the photo I wanted
-cleaned the whole house and mopped floors
-threw out a pile of catalogs
-made a to-do list and a very short repairs list--everything is pretty much in order
-made a shopping list
-started cataloging my books

I've been behind...life has been getting in the way!
I've posted my "done" stuff on my blog, and on flickr...

I'm narrowing down a shopping list and setting my budget--I know I should have done that by now, but I've been avoiding it. :)
I mapped out a new floor plan, but I'm insecure about it...if you read my post on my blog you'll see--I understand the concept of flow, but I have trouble applying it.
I also edited and hopefully crystallized my style tray.
This is the point when I always get nervous, second guess my ideas and water everything down and do nothing....so any feedback is appreciated!

I am doing the one room cure for the kitchen area of my studio, but being that I live in one room, I am doing some deep treatment also. I've been working on my apartment steadily since I moved in 8 months ago and the kitchen is the one area where my progress is continuously derailed. Here is what I have done for my combo cure so far:
week 1: vacuumed and mopped; got rid of my sandwich maker; bought lillies; chose my kitchen to cure; set my budget to complete the already hellish renovation; did my taxes and cut back on my budget accordingly; checked out the flickr group and was really surprised to see a comment on one of my pictures
week 2: fixed the wobbly leg on my landing strip table; threw away expired items in the kitchen; put unmatched flatware in the outbox; bought daffodils; cooked a meal for myself and made the Guinness Chocolate Ice Cream from thekitchn site as a surprise for my boyfriend http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/recipe-review/david-lebovitzs-guinnessmilk-chocolate-ice-cream-045655 ; played with Ikea floorplans for my future kitchen
Beginning of Week 3:
bought daisies; put every magazine I own out with the recycling; emailed the previous owner of my apartment to let them know I still have their mail; applied the 80/20 rule by painting the inside of my front door, the hallway wall facing my door, and the inside of the window frames bright turquoise; made a shopping list for the kitchen reno; still LOTS to do ...

evillstudio:
I brought my sandwich maker into work. The guys in lab are loving it and I think we're actually all eating a little healthier.
Which reminds me, on our weekly trip to Fairway, we need to pick up some more bread. A couple of us from work go in on Mondays.

Well I'm way behind but I made a few strides this weekend. I finally posted my before pictures to the flickr group http://www.flickr.com/photos/35292112@N00/sets/72157604233157016/ . The kitchen countertop has been measured and we are just waiting to hear what day this week they will able to install. I did some backsplash research and I think we're going to go with glass subway tiles. If anyone has and good sources for glass tiles I'd love to hear them.
I order battery operated sconces for the bedroom. Hopefully they'll be bright enough to read by and don't look to cheesy. I'm pretty excited about the fact that there will be no visible wires and no hardwiring required.
I've been trying to keep up with the floors although a puppy in the mist of housebreaking is making that a little tough. The new cleaning task to tackle is getting the bf to fold and put away his cloths.
My mom helped out with the fresh flowers by bringing me a potted lily for easter. Now (if I remember to water it) I'll have fresh flowers for a several weeks.
