apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The Spring Cure: Graduation!

5-4-flowers.jpg

Kristine reached the end of week 8 and has set a lovely table for a future party.

Good Quotes: Having this community to bounce ideas off of was amazing-who would have known a bunch of strangers could be so much help?

We had my sons 3rd birthday on Friday- I didn't have to do the "flight of the butterfly" to get ready and I have NEVER been so calm to have family and friends over. Thanks so much!!! - Lorijo

5-4-curetrophy.jpgCongratulations to the Cure Class of Spring '07! Eight weeks is a long time to sustain one piece of work on the home, so you all deserve a lot of credit for making real change happen in your life on whatever level you were able to stick with the Cure. Below is the most comprehensive list I could put together of those who worked on this Cure. I found you from comments and from the Flickr pool.

For the first time I would like to send each of you a Cure Diploma. If you are on the list below and would like one, please email me at maxwell @ apartmenttherapy . com and put CURE in the subject header. Comment if I missed you!

Without further ado, I present the Class of Spring '07 and announce the next Cure to start on Monday, October 1st:

I'm not on the list. Does that mean I failed?

I suppose, technically, I have as my home is actually messier than when I started due to all the exuberant building work in progress. But as I'll definitely have finished in time for the next cure, I should get my diploma one day...

Yay for everyone else, though - you've all done brilliantly!

It can't, zooza. 'Cause lord knows I'm not done yet either. I'll send for my diploma when I truly finish.

I'm a cure dropout! Well, I have had excuses. I was super busy and gone many weekends during the cure. I will keep working on my bedroom, slowly but surely, however.

My plan was to get new flooring installed in my bedroom, get new dressers, and add more color. Although none of those things were actually acheived, I did a ton of reasearch, gathered a lot of fabric samples, and actually made some decisions about what I will do. I also replaced the broken window in my bedroom and purchased and installed a new window treatment/sliding panel system.

Actually spending the cash to get the other things done, however, dropped to the bottom of my priority list when I learned half-way through the cure that I should be concentrating on a "nine-month cure" of my own.

Yes, creating a nursery (and rearranging the rooms in my house to accomodate this) is now my design priority. I appreciate all the great resources apartmenttherapy provides for that endeavor, and I am greatly looking forward to it. I will keep you updated!

Congratulation to all and sundry. And shall probably see many of you in October....

I am planning on doing the one room cure next time around. I have a semi finished basement that I want to turn into a family room. I keep planning it but I think the cure community may help me actually DO it.

I had a lot of fun doing this (fun? really?) Congratulations to everyone and I'll talk to you in the fall....

No diploma for me until I actually hold a party, thank you!

Amazingly, I will not be doing the next group Cure because it falls at the end of my first MBA term, including finals week.

Congrats on the Impending Arrival, heps!

i'll take it like one should take a compliment and say "thank you!" and be flattered that i'm in such awesome company. (although since i'm not finished yet i'm hanging back from the grads and, while they're rushing to get their diplomas, i'll just slip out to the paint store to get my supplies for monday...)

congratulations fellow Curers! I hosted my book club last night and the apartment got rave reviews. I posted new pics to the Flickr account, but my battery ran out before I could get the toasting picture :-(

I'll be back in October to cure my bedroom and to continue the trend of discarding stuff I just don't need...

Finally touched all my walls.... Felt lots of things but didn't know how to interpret them. But it is neat how my windows now seem much more integrated with the walls. The energy coming through them is amazing. And they play such a strong protective role from the elements that I hadn't fully appreciated. I hadn't even realized it, but somehow I'd been somehow separating these (windows/walls) - since all my schemes to improve things involve only the inner space and walls, even the curtains. But the windows themselves are also part of the whole thing, and they felt great.

Glad there'll be another Cure in October!

In the meantime, I'm going to 'Cure' my hard drives and research files and maybe even my office.

Congratulations to everyone.

I am already looking forward to the October cure...this really got me in the groove of taking care of my apartment (translate=my needs) and it will be good to know I can plan ahead for October and be ready for another face lift. Who knows...we may even do a one-room cure and fix up our kitchen/seating situation so that our legs fit under the table. Congrats to all - your comments and gorgeous homes and hard work have been the inspiration.

zooza -- You definitely belong on the list! So do you, kendra.e!

Congrats to all the graduates! (And delighted exclamations of joy to heps, for being promoted to nine-month cure!)

I didn't make the cut -- my Cure bogged way down this time, and I don't have "settled-in-to-the-new-apartment" pics to post, but by October surely I'll have the curtain rods up, and can be part of the October class. (I could become a perpetual curer like the esteemed JonathanB and wende in phoenix) (by the way, wende, good luck in the MBA course!!! and say hi to Marva and Brian for me.)

Way to go, y'all!!!

I am not really finished, but I have to say this has def been a great thing. We have had dinner every night at the table, so finally getting kitchen chairs really has transformed how we talk over dinner. I also have to say while I think I denied having any problems working together with mr. kendra.e, we have had a lot of discussions about what kind of furniture we each like and hate and are still working that out, but it is kinda nice to have a place we both love. I'm going to try to post some pictures of the awesome room this weekend, as it is right now. Not perfect or finish, but much better than when we started!

Smallcitybeth, rest assured that an apartment Cures better when it's had a chance to... uh... "cure" (in the sense of paint or aged beef). You and the apartment have to get to know each other.

My sense is that an apartment is less like a tailored suit, where you get one set of alterations at the outset and it's supposed to fit perfectly and stay that way, and more like a good pair of shoes or jeans, where they start out with a pretty good fit, but you gradually break them in so that they mold themselves around you.

I've been pondering the Serial Curing phenomenon... some of this is about environment not keeping up with changing needs. For people who feel stuck, derailed, etc., light summer reading might include Clare Cooper Marcus' House as a Mirror of Self.

The list is a nice touch, but as I'm a Cure dropout, I feel like a fraud being on it. Although doing the Cure did get me to finally do several things (cover the window in the front door, hang a clock, finally scrub the inside of the trash cabinet, organize the basement) that needed to be done.

I will finish...sometime.

Congrats to those who could stick with the 8-week schedule though! Curing is more beneficial than it sounds, especially as a group, but the timeline is ambitious.

As a likely serial curate, I'd like to point out that the deep treatment is easily one's annual spring cleaning. And just rotating rooms (or areas) each fall would allow one to hit each room (or area) every few years, which would be about right.

Congratulations to the grads.

Dropped out early. Or rather have continued the ongoing Cure of the office/or space-that-is-dumping-ground-for-whatever-I-can't-deal-with-right-now. Accomplishments: almost all my unhung art is now in one closet; rotating the art is going well, and I have art in unexpected places now. Almost all the in-house paperwork is organized and systematized. Unused tech is now confined to three boxes. Uncontrolled camera bags, computer bags, etc. now confined to one empty suitcase and one duffel. 50% of my clothes has been given to charity. Master bedroom closet is clean and completely organized. One bedroom closet has been devoted to collectibles and a gift box. Two computers have found new homes. So, I guess, I'm an auditor, rather than a dropout.

Hi everybody and congratulations to all fellow Curers!

Zooza, i was also surprised that you're not on the list as i checked it!

My kitchen is starting to look like a kitchen again, last friday everything has been delivered and i had taken a day off. I can say that i'm now i real expert in assembling IKEA FAKTUM cabinets. Friday evening i was able to assemble a wallmounted cabinet in only 15-20 minutes ( only the corpus, without the doors ).
Yetsready i had help and we worked 10 hours straight to put together the kitchen and install it.
Today, my help fixed the doors on the wallmounted cabinets and we prepared the resting cabinets for the oven / vitroceram.

Ah, and surprise on friday when the electrician delivered teh oven: when i ordered it in the shop it was clearly marked as "cuisinière" (french word for it ) which means oven and vitroceram combined, though it is actually just the oven. Great and costy surprise! They needed to order the vitroceram seperately, which adds to my bill ( about 800 swiss francs ).
Tomorrow evening we will continue installing, tuesday the electrician will finish all his work and wednesday the plumber will fix the washing machine and sink and put water again.
I think that by thursday evenign we will be able to finish everything, so that on friday evening i can take my cats back home ( i miss them so much).

I've posted some new pictures in the pool:

Jany - your kitchen is certainly coming together. Those cabinets look so good with your tiles. Very classy.

A suggestion for Maxwell:

Why not add a message board to the site (maybe based on the craigslist format which is very easy to use) for people to post about the cure during the off months of the "official" cure blog? I think people posting here and linking to flickr if needed is much easier and makes more sense than having off site conversations on flickr.

Plus some people are blogging about the cure (I have started though I am in the preliminary stage before even week 1) and it would be great to have a list somewhere on the AT site where those who are blogging about the cure can post links to their sites.

Love the site! Thanks for all the hard work and thanks to all the users for the inspiration. I can only hope my apartment therapy goes as well as some others' users have!

Ha, I'm back and I returned to a fully tiled bathroom! Will post pics once my computer is un-crashed (exactly what I was hoping to come back to, along with a jury duty summons and a letter from the DMV who seem convinced that I have no insurance on my car no matter what I tell them to the contrary). But anyways, my shower is gorgeous and now I am going to go install the sink and call somebody about a shower door. Yay for coming back and having things actually progress, I will do my darndest to post pics soon and we late-Curers can just call ourselves Super Seniors or something.

PS Zooza thanks for the shout out, hope your trip went well and your tile goes easier than mine did!

Well, except for little things like a TP holder and ceiling paint touch-ups. But we can shower in it as soon as the adhesive is dry on the door!
