HGTV Design Star: Fallen Star Josh Johnson

09-04-joshjohnson_1alt.jpg

Sparkle, sparkle, fallen star. Who knew you could be too glitzy for Sin City? Josh Johnson found out the hard way, and had to pack up his BeDazzler and head back home at the end of the Wedding Challenge episode of HGTV's big hit Design Star.

The always upbeat, almost always glamorous designer from Hendersonville, Tennessee was sent South in the double elimination he shared with fellow castmate Christina Ray. We’ll miss his unflagging sense of humor and truly unique way with words… after all, he coined the term “celebu-teen.”

09-04-joshjohnson_2alt.jpgWas the “Sparkle Josh” moniker a blessing or curse? Did he share anything other than a first name with Josh Foss? What role does a sense of humor play in the life of a designer? What’s the one condition that would make him do it all over? Is “shopping” a bad word?! The slimmer Southern Fabio lets his hair down, and kept us laughing the whole time.

09-04-joshjohnson_3.jpgJosh also spoke highly of the talented cast (that seemed genuinely sorry to see him go). And explained why there’s room on HGTV for a little weekly choreography. Seriously.

But while we didn’t get to ask him, we think maybe he meant the urban Faith Hill and the country Queen Latifah in his oft-quoted line from Challenge 1.

See what Josh Johnson is up to at his website. (The chandelier! The belt buckles! The cheekbones! The pout! Soooo worth the trip. Turn your sound down!) or his myspace page.

Each week we’re interviewing the latest fallen Star from the cast of Design Star. And hear all about the show direct from the HGTV VP, Event Programming, James Bolosh, in the interview that kicked off the season of this HGTV ratings powerhouse exclusively for AT readers.

Look....the guy IS a joke....take a look around his website....look at his "performance" on TV. He'd like nothing better than to be a "celebu-queen". The guy was born with a be-dazzler in his hands....

The man is a caricature. I could see him as a villain from a Will Ferrell movie. His work is certainly as over the top as he is, though I know there's a market for it, so more power to him. I don't think this is name calling, I really don't. He might not like it (and as someone else pointed out, he just might), but there it is.

My first thought was Zaphod Beeblebrox from Hitchhiker's Guide. It's that "I must wear shades to protect my eyes from my own splendor" persona that makes the impression. Oddly, the interview doesn't come off that way at all.

This Josh seems like he'd be kind of fun to have as a neighbor, safely at the far end of the corridor in case his parties got a little loud.

Wierd - I thought he was great. Entertaining, sweet, didn't act like a drama queen except for amusing effect, got along well with the rest of the cast. He seemed like he was one of the more genuine and kinder people on there. So he's campy - big deal. I know lots of people who are campy. They're typically more fun than the people who think the catalog perfect design of their living room will make people like them. He was angling to get a tv show for the love of god - campy would have been a lot more entertaining than the vast majority of the junk on HG.

Joke or not, bedazzler or not, do you see the difference between him doing what he does and *you* caling him a queen?

i thought he was a terrific presence. he was sweet, smart, and seemed happy to be there and interact with his competitors. he's got a great attitude and a definite vision, and altho he doesn't have the design versatility to host a more all-purpose design show, i think it's really cool that HGTV respected his vision and talent by choosing him as a contender.

I agree with biskinikill. I liked him because he seemed nice and had a great attitude. He seemed to respect others. Not like that dufus who got kicked to the curb at Wayne Newtons. I can't stand these shows where there is a contestant who is rude and obnoxious. Listen, his design skills weren't for everyone,(like me) but I enjoyed watching him. He would be a good host for show (imho) as long as someone else reined him in a tad.

Yeah I liked watching Josh too. He seemed genuinuely nice and easy to get along with (a plus for the other people in the show); I would have watched his show if he had indeed won. I might not have gotten a lot of ideas for my house from his show, but I would have watched and enjoyed! He was vastly more entertaining and less irritating than Robb for example...

Behind all the feathers and glitter he seems very genuine. I was rooting for him to go all the way. HGTV need to mix it up. So many of their design shows are all the same with the same tired and predictable results. Josh's would have definately stood out from the crowd.
Thanks again Patrick!

This guy is hysterical! (and unusually pretty). I've never seen this show he was on, but I just read his little bio on the HGTV website for the show. I never would have guessed this guy used to be a probation officer or that he can clog. BTW, I just looked at the wedding he did, and that was pretty terrible, but the other stuff wasn't so bad

Yes he looks like half of the group "Nelson", but he also looks like a nice guy. He's got a friendly smile.

And hang on to your belt buckles, kids... Robb's interview is up next!

(ps: You're welcome, Dave!)

I think Sparklehorse means "insane" in a good way. Fabio made me think about the duck and then about romance novel covers and that made me think about the Longmire parodies and I discovered even more Longmire which had a fake interview in a Tennessee bar and the use of "insane" to mean exciting. Always hearted to discover humans who are kind and funny and creative. Bless your heart, Josh, Good Luck to ya'

HGTV Design Star Indiscretion?

Is Kim Myles ineligible to participate in Design Star? That is the question many are asking concerning this Final 2 contestant. Has something improper occurred or is it just a coincidence? You be the judge.

It was recently discovered that Design Star contestant Kim Myles is a personal friend of James Patrick Herman, Senior Entertainment Editor of InStyle magazine. Herman revealed on the InStyle blog, on July 20, 2007, http://partyhopper.instyle.com/2007/07/americas-next-t.html

"Kim is my friend and neighbor, .....She’s also my hairdresser, by the way...."

In this article, he references an earlier article mentioning Myles from November 2006, which suggests they were friends long before the taping began of Design Star Season 2.

Why is this important? According to the Eligibility Rules for participating in Design Star,

"...any applicant closely acquainted with any person connected with the production or administration or exhibition of the Program is not eligible..."

Every Design Star viewer knows that Martha McCully, one of the judges on the Design Star panel, is also an editor for InStyle, and that at least one of the prizes was provided by InStyle magazine. All of this suggests that Kim Myles may be ineligible to compete in Design Star.

Herman goes further by stating, "And, of course, I’d recommend rooting for Kim on Design Star!" No other contestant has been singled out in this manner or had the benefit of a recommendation from the official InStyle website.

Has an impropriety occurred? It begs these questions:

"Did Kim reveal to HGTV/Scripps Network her personal relationship with Herman?"

"Was Kim accepted as a contestant on Design Star because of her personal relationship with an InStyle senior editor?"

"Was Kim swept to the final 2 because of her personal relationship with the InStyle senior editor?"

What do you think? Would you like to get to the bottom of this?

Actually Sparklehorse is an indie guitar band.
And nope, I didn't mean insane in a positive way.
And it is not remotely homophobic to detest such a gross liberace-like aesthetic, so don't you dare try and say it is Patrick.

Wouldn't dream of it, sparkle. Because at least you did not *blatantly* tie one's aesthetic with one's orientation. And, unfortunatley, it *is* fair game to slam one's aesthetic choices.

I'm guessing that most of the people here who said nasty things about Josh Johnson didn't really watch Design Star this season. He came off as very kind, genuine, intelligent but down-to-Earth, and as someone the rest of the cast loved and respected. I also don't understand why people are saying his designs were too over-the-top or that he couldn't switch from his personal glamour style to do anything varied, because the dining room he did was beautiful - functional, and it was contemporary yet rich and classic. AND the room that he and Will designed together was also very good - symmetrical and contemporary with none of the over-the-top glitz that's so evident in Josh's personal style either. Maybe people should first learn a little about people before they go judging and saying nasty garbage about them. There was a reason why the cast AND audience as well all loved Josh Johnson -- it's because he was a class act from beginning to end, always taking the high road, never speaking nasty about anyone, and adding the most refreshingly positive touch to this year's lackluster Design Star season. He'll go far not only for his talents, but for his great personality.
