HGTV Design Star: Fallen Star Scott Corridan

8.14design.jpgMore behind the scenes sneak peaks from the very blue eyes of one of this week’s casualties of HGTV’s Design Star California Dreamer Scott Corridan.

As you’ll hear, this successful event planner is talented, funny, upbeat, and genuine—and was genuinely surprised about this week’s elimination… as surprised as we were. We thought this media-savvy fellow was in it for the long haul...

8.14#2.jpgYou can literally hear the twinkle (and maybe a tear) in his eye as he talks fondly but wistfully about the show, his cast mates, his decisions, how the Design Star shoot was just a little like prison, and why his “more is more” approach to the individual Dollar Store challenge was actually a very calculated decision.

Like the true gentleman we always suspected he is, Scott stops short of outright criticism of the judges whose verdicts ushered him off the Vegas soundstage. But he does have his opinions about why the winner of Season Two is truly anyone’s guess. Emphasis on the word “guess.” Well, it IS Vegas, home of the Craps table…

You can see more of Scott’s work, credentials and his it- never- rains- in- California outlook at his company website corridandoco.com.

Remember, each week we’ll be interviewing the latest fallen Star from the cast of Design Star.

And hear all about the show straight from the HGTV VP, Event Programming, James Bolosh, in the interview that kicked off the season of this HGTV ratings powerhouse exclusively for AT readers.

I loved his choice of colors, the bean and chiles rug and, the walls... but I do agree that there was too much stuff crammed into that little space. It would have been nice to see him go further....

You were really surprised??? That room made me want to . . . ummmm, cry? It was like the Mexico City Pier One outlet store exploded, and he forgot to sweep up. Sorry, but I'm glad I won't have to watch that baby weep through another episode. I'm sure he's nice, but he was way annoying as a personality and this last room was dreadful.

Sorry, but using those chilis as "fringe" on his rug was brilliant.

Listen to the interview to hear why he did what he did.

I thought Scott was one of the most talented designers they had on the show and was shocked that he was sent packing. He seemed like a great guy too and I would love to have watched him have his own show. Having said that, I'm clearly not on the same wavelength as the judges. I thought that red, white and black room was vile, and I didn't think too much of the swiss flag room or the chartreuse and black room either.

Really nice interview.

I can not believe that Scott was voted out so soon! You were on my list for top 5.

The top 3 designs this week... FORGET ABOUT IT. That red one, with the stripes, talk about plain boring, yuk.

Oh, and I could do without all the giggling over Scotts answers in the audio interview.

First off, lemme say that I think they are moving this show along wayyy to quickly. I think it is MUCH better than Top Design, but they are rushing it by losing 2 designers a week- I mean come on, thats brutal!

I also think that the judges need to step back and think about what kind of show HGTV wants. Because in my mind, the rooms they applauded- the red and black room, black and green room and the blue and green room all vaguely remind me of David's (the winner of Season 1) style. A kind of crisp, contemporary style with a graphical element.

Now why would HGTV want two shows highlighting designers with similar styles? I thought Scott or Josh would have brought an organiz flair to their show that would set it apart from David's show. But for some reason it feels like deja vu all over again...

I thought he was going all the way- at least to the final 2 or 3.

I agree that they are moving the show too quickly...why wouldn't they want to drag it out a little longer...

I think if Scott had edited this room a bit, it would have been wonderful. There were a lot of great elements. I also agree with tallguylehigh that the other designers do have very similar styles...Scott was an interesting juxtaposition.

I do wish he had cried less...but who knows with TV editing...

and Patrick, I think the laughs added to the interview...

Patrick, thanks so much for these interviews. You're giving us some glimpses behind the blogs, and finding human interest in the fallen stars.

I'm sorry that Scott and Adriana were eliminated this week.

I think this an appropriate time to give another round of thanks to HGTV VP James Bolosh, who has really provided AT with an all-access pass to these great, funny, talented people... himself included!

Sure they/he are/is getting something out of this exposure, too, but HGTV could have kept all the blog-based attention within their own virtual walls.

The competition in this year's generic room episode (plain couch, sofa, bookcase) was much more fierce than last time. Clearly, the contestants learned from watching last year's competition. (last year 3 designers forgot to save money for paint. This year, no one forgot.) Scott's room was overdone, and it was probably the only one that was far below the others.Too bad, because he clearly has the personality and desire for his own show, not to mention the talent. As for Adriana: too close to call. I'm willing to bet that Robb won't make the final 3 or 4--unless he can tone down his acerbic personality. Would you want to bet the success of a design show on him?

I agree with the judges on this one. Sure he was nice and all, but a big lesson is to not have so much in a room, I would think that is a fairly basic lesson, that he hadnt learned yet. It looked like someone threw up in there, all the chili and beans on the floor. Way too many glasses everywhere. Ugh.

But I still thought this was the greatest interior design episode of any show I have ever seen, EVER. Dollar store, BRILLIANT!!! I dont have alot of money, I dont have a big place. Design with constraints is the name of the game.

i was disappointed to see scott go. learning how to hold back and not over-accessorize is an easy lesson to learn. he clearly had the basic elements in place and could benefit from some editing, but had a lot of great talent already within him.

so i think the judges should've put more faith in him, as lacking creativity (christina's generic "mod" room) is a much bigger problem to fix.

i'll miss ya, scott!
