apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

AT in the Daily News!

3-30--daily-news.jpgWe're basically shy, but when you have a book to flog you'll do anything, including sitting on your bed next to all your carefully arranged laundry change smiling for the camera.

In case you missed reading The Daily News yesterday, Apartment Therapy, the new book and yours truly got some great coverage.

In a two page spread, The Simple Life: Give your place a new lease on light by following this designer's tenets, everything that we believe in was proudly trumpeted in Daily News fashion... yes, there's juicy personal tidbits.

There is a lot in this article and much has been pulled from the book. Here is a really nice clip from the article from Deborah Needleman, the editor of Domino Magazine:

Deborah Needleman, the editor of Domino and a longtime fan, says that in the 2 1/2 years since apartmenttherapy.com came online, Gillingham-Ryan has become something of an icon to the "vast middle," between do-it-yourselfers and those led from showroom to showroom by decorators. What's so appealing, she says, is his total lack of snobbery, which makes his one of the few no-snark-zones in the blogosphere.

"He is driven by the love of design and the desire to connect people with resources and make their homes work for them," Needleman says. "You get the sense that he is reacting against the perfectly decorated home, where everything looks perfect but you don't feel comfortable and happy."

And with this, we are easily pushing our 13th minute of fame. Time to get back to work.

Congrats on your soon-to-arrive baby baby! So happy for you both. :)

"He uses an 80/20 ratio: 80% warm rooms (reds, yellows, oranges, beiges), 20% cool (blues, greens, grays)."

Granted, I read through the book hastily last night after my purchase, but isn't it 80% neutral and 20% color? By the way, I am going to flagrantly violate this rule during my cure.

Congrats on the press! I am so excited to have my book.

Congrats on the two Bs - book and and baby! Great article too.

As a design junkie with a baby, I will be very curious to hear how you "design around" and for baby. If anyone can do it, I am sure you can (and hopefully will show us how)

Good luck!

Well deserved praise. You've created the smartest "home-focused" site I've ever come across.

Looking forward to your moving into TV and beyond!

How about "Kate Sara Sara"? Or "Silverhammer Gillingham-Ryan"?

Congratulations. The way you've built a genuine community from a blog that could have easily been a "buy this pretty thing" online picture book is a testament to the kind and genuine people you and Sara Kate are. You're going to be wonderful parents.

Curtis,

Love your suggestion of "Kate Sara Sara" !!!

IF the baby is a girl, and regardless of what beautiful name Maxwell and Sara Kate chooses for her, I think I and many of the baby's other AT uncles and aunties will always think of this charming and endearing nickname you've come up for her. (it's such a nice tribute to Sara Kate too).

You are so on-the-money!

gekko-
That reminds me, my bro-in-law's sis and her husband kept putting off naming their little girl; they kept saying "Manana" meaning "tomorrow". And then they ended up naming her "Yanna" -- short for "Manana".

Curtis, you might tell them, Manana is a legitimate Georgian name (georgian from Caucasus). No soft "n".

Notice how we all assumed "it's a girl"? Somehow a girl is fitting ...hmmm.

I gave a possible boy's name -- "Silverhammer Gillingham-Ryan"; the girl one seemed to have captured gekko's imagination more.
