AT Walks The Island 2009: 16 Miles in BKLYN & an Amazing Day

We did it again, and this time with the biggest group ever and the longest route ever, but we still caught the sunset over the Statue of Liberty. Last Sunday just over 35 of us gathered out at Nathan's hot dog stand on Surf Avenue at Coney Island at 9am and set out to walk all the way through Brooklyn, ending up over the Brooklyn Bridge and finishing at the Battery. At 5pm, 27 of us finished and 25 got into the final picture.

On the subway heading out....

This year's walk was different because we stepped off of Broadway for the first time and chose a rather circuitous route through Brooklyn. While not always as scenic, it was definitely new and fresh and it fit the bill by walking all of us through many neighborhoods we'd never walked through before (though some of us passed their own homes along our route!).

The full starting crew at Nathan's....

We started by heading along the boardwalk, then turned down Ocean Avenue for awhile before switching to Coney Island Avenue and then a zig through Ditmas Park. Arriving at Prospect Park for lunch we all took a break and ate, then started up again by walking through the heart of the park - soooo sunny - before heading down Flatbush, taking a left on Atlantic, then a right on Cadman which took us right over the - very crowded bridge. The Battery was just a hop, skip and a jump from there.

Those that reached the bridge....

This year's trip was a bit tougher because we had to stop more often to check our route, which I would like to NOT do again. It's far preferable to walk one clear route all the way. Next year we'll make a much clearer route and we may go back to Broadway, unless something more delicious pops up.

All made it to the Battery for this amazing sunset!

In the meantime, thanks to everyone who made it and see you next year!

Best, Maxwell

It was a great time. I strongly recommend this walk to people for next year. It was a good group of relaxed people taking a long walk on a beautiful day.

Highlights:
-walking along the beach at Coney Island in the morning
-immaculately trimmed boxwood hedges along Ocean Park Blvd.
- seeing a woman who brought a rake to Prospect Park so she could make leaf piles for her deliriously happy kids.
- the pickle store which was full of all sorts of brined goodness that I'll have to try some day.
-a beautiful sunset in Battery Park.
-meeting everyone on the walk.

It was a glorious day! I highly recommend the walk as well.

I had wanted to do this walk for the past 2 years, but the schedule didn't fit until this year. Boy, am I glad I did (despite the sore feet at the end of the day)

Great company of fellow walkers. I particularly enjoyed learning about the Secret Science Club in Brooklyn. This city is full of wonders for us all to discover...

It was a wonderful walk through various neighbourhoods in Brooklyn: I enjoyed strolling on the boardwalk at Coney Island, watching Brooklynites play soccer, romp in leave and jog on a perfect Sunday afternoon in Prospect Park. Most of all, I enjoy sharing my day with such a wonderful group of New Yorkers. Maxwell was the perfect organizer to lead such a highly enthusiastic group of walkers.

I walked the entire walk and made it into some of the pics.
It was great fun ....can't wait for next year!!
