When Alayne Patrick was opening Layla many years ago, she asked us for help (we had a friend in common). She didn't need it. Alayne's sense of style and attention to detail are so refined that we had little more to offer and, instead, learned a great deal from her. Her shop, Layla, is an exquisite blend of housewares and clothing for the world shopper...
One of the things we learned from Alayne was how good Ralph Lauren's white paint collection was. In her home and her store (there's more pics of both in Domino this month), you will see an amazing use of various wall whites set against deep browns in the floor. Visiting her, you will come away with more than products.
A longtime film stylist, Alayne's shop is the fruit of her passion and her travels, conveying the warmth, color and simplicity that comes from mixing styles of north and south. I've been to this shop on a few occassions. She has lovely things but she and her staff person are really quite off-putting. I'm never quite sure if I'm actually supposed to buy something or tell her how great she is.

i have to say, i'm in complete agreement with hshppy. i live in the neighborhood and am quite the shopper--the two times i have been in her store (while quite lovely), she was completely rude and arrogant to myself and the other shoppers there--for no apparent reason. i have never visited her place again--a first for me, living in new york for many years. all in all, a bizarre shopping experience...

I also have to agree with brooklynguy and hshappy. I live locally and have been in there a couple of times -- even bought something. It's a lovely store but I won't go again. I have such a bad feeling about them. They are condescending and pretentious and about what, I don't have a clue. Unlike Moss in Soho (re: the post from last week) where once you engage w/the sales staff, they are super helpful, informed and encouraging. This tiny store makes you feel that they want to pick and chose a certain clientele, and that's who they will be courteous to. There are too many other wonderfully unique shops in Brooklyn to visit to put up with their arrogance.

You people are unbelieveable. I have been shopping at Layla for a few years now and NEVER has anyone been rude. You people don't deserve to shop in a store as unique as Layla. Do us all a favor and shop elsewhere. People like you are so ignorant! Ever think that the workers there may have been having a bad day? I would love to see some of you fly to CA for a day or 2 (to work) then to India for a few weeks (to work), then back to Brooklyn to work a full shift with over 30 hours of sleepless travel. Alayne is extraordinary!! You people don't deserve her time.

She was rude to me the one time I stopped in too-- condescending and totally unpleasant. I felt like I was totally unwelcome-- makes me wonder, who is welcome in her store?

I was so surprised by these comments about Layla. It is one of my very favorite stores, and I have never found Alayne or any of the staff to be anything less than warm, eager to help and considerate. Plus, Alayne has truly exquisite taste and an infallible eye. Not to be missed by anyone seeking beauty and unique style.
