Organic Cotton Pleated Bedding from West Elm

5-9-pleated-bedding-1.jpg

We just spotted this Good Question on the LA site about an inexpensive version of Anthropologie's Cirrus duvet and we have the perfect alternative — West Elm's
Organic Cotton Pleated Bedding
. Made of undyed, 230-thread-count organic cotton, the duvet owes its appeal to the pintucks and pleats that enhance its shape. Who needs color when you've got texture like this?

Primo Stainless Steel Hairdryer Holder from Blomus

5-9-hairdryer-holder-1.jpg

A holster for your hairdryer! So we're a little late to the Hairdryer Holder Party that took place at ATLA during bathroom month. This is an upgrade that is affordable and could make a huge difference in a small space. Part of the Primo family of bathroom accessories from Blomus, this hairdryer holder mounts to the wall and frees up counter space. The interior of the holster is even padded to prevent scratches...

5-9-refresh-carafe-1.jpg

Multi-functionalism is always a plus in our book. The reFRESH carafe is part of the WaterNetworks Drops collection from Swiss designers, Fulguro. The carafe features both a spout for drinking water and sprinkling holes for watering a plant...

AT Survey: Economic Stimulus Payments

5-9-stimulus.jpg

Many of us will be receiving (if we haven't already) an "economic stimulus payment" from the federal government. Some friends of ours went to Aruba. Others are paying down debt. We're curious to see how AT readers will be using the bonus cash...

Biodegradable Furnishings
The New York Times 5.8.08

5-8-biodegradable.jpg

As more and more products with labels like "green" and "sustainable" enter the marketplace, companies look for new ways to stand out. And the latest development? Furnishings labeled "biodegradable." In a truly interesting article, The New York Times explores biodegradable furniture and furnishings and how they relate to William McDonough's Cradle to Cradle manifesto...

High End Bathtubs
The New York Times 5.8.08

5-8-bathtubs-1.jpg

Bath tubs have morphed into sculpture. The New York Times rounds up some very, very pricey tubs that will elevate your bathroom to art gallery status. If you have the budget — and space — for some of these behemouths, make sure you have a cleaning service (keeping a stainless steel bathtub void of spots and streaks is not our idea of fun)...

Glass Staircase
The New York Times 5.8.08

5-8-glass-stair.jpg

All-glass stairs can be a great solution for flooding an older building with light — or it can be a terrifying exercise in acrophobia. The New York Times looks at some Victorian-era homes in London that have been transformed by glass stairs and light wells. Included is an anecdote of a woman who refused to descend a glass staircase...

Timber Block Stool from VivaTerra

5-8-timber-stool-1.jpg

We've always admired Brent Comber's Adler Cube Table (above, right). Made from Cedar, Douglas fir and maple branches that would have been treated as waste, the cubes are a one-of-a-kind table that is both modern and rustic. Because Adler Cubes start at over $1,000, we've never thought about seriously owning one (let alone, two). VivaTerra sells a similar product for only $369 (above, left)...

Railroad Station Home
The New York Times 5.7.08

5-7-railroad-house-1.jpg

It's rare when a home featured in The New York Times' special real estate section Great Homes & Destinations is small and makes clever use of a tight space. But this one does both. This former rail station (measuring just 753-square-feet) in Lenwade, England was renovated by Steve Sokalsky into a two-bedroom one-bath home for his family. The renovation included installing space-saving electrical outlets in the small kitchen...

Octopus Chandeliers from Autoban by De La Espada

5-7-octopus-lamp-1.jpg

Autoban's Octopus Chandeliers from 2005 have become part of the Autoban by De La Espada collection. The modern and utilitarian appeal of Autobahn's Octopus Chandeliers is immediately apparent. Balancing the delicateness of a chandelier with the customization of a modern lighting element, Octopus lamps are a sculptural centerpiece. This design is reminiscent of the industrial Jield lamps on a much larger and more glamorous scale...

Debranded Home Bathroom Labels

5-7-modern-label-duo.jpg

Maxwell has long been a fan of de-branding your home by reducing the number of branded bottles and containers of necessary cleaning products. Debranded Home is on a similar mission. In addition to How-To recipes for soap and shampoo, the site offers reusable vinyl labels to identify common bathroom products...

A Greener Mattress: Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo

5-7-seo-mattress-1.jpg

By using a combination of natural latex, Tencel, soy-based foam, recycled steel and wood from accredited and sustainably managed forests, Danny Seo has helped create a greener, affordable mattress for Simmons — the Natural Care. The mattress will be available at JCPenney, as part of Seo's efforts to help give the retailer a greener image...

Organizing Books: Animal Index Cards

5-6-animal-cards-1.jpgBooks and book organization are a popular subject on AT. Whether our readers are organizing their collection of magazines or standing tall for the protection of books' spines, you love books. These cards in the shape of animal silhouettes were designed by Hiroshi Sasagawa to add visual interest and organization to your book shelves...

Step Stools by Paul Loebach

Brooklyn-based designer Paul Loebach recently sent us his updated portfolio of designs that debuted at last month's Milan Salon Satellite. Our personal favorite, Step Stools is made up of three perfectly nested foot stools with turned legs...

Modern Connecticut Country House
The New York Times 5.4.08

5-6-connecticut-modern-1.jpg

The Connecticut weekend home of Style Guy Glenn O'Brien and Gina Nanni was our favorite part of the latest T Style Magazine from The New York Times. A modern renovation of a 1940's two-story house, the home's white interior evokes a comfort and style most often seen in the pages of Britain's Livingetc magazine...

Dover Collection: Faux Concrete from Crate & Barrel

5-6-concrete-platter.jpgWe're big fans of concrete applications in the home: concrete floors, counter tops, etc. It's a material that is versatile, inexpensive and tough. The Dover Collection from Crate & Barrel marries the look of concrete with decorative objects for the home. By using a resin mixed with stone dust (polystone), the pieces have the feel of concrete without the weight...

MELBU Small Round Table from IKEA

5-5-round-table-ikea.jpgA small round table can be the perfect solution to breaking up the hard angles of a small space. A little over two feet in diameter, the glass-topped MELBU table is categorized as a bedside table by IKEA. While we prefer a bedside table with closed storage options, a pair of MELBUs could be used as a coffee table to give a living room a modern update...

Sketchpad: Garden Apartment
The New York Times 5.4.08

5-5-garden-apt-1.jpg

The most recent Sketch Pad feature from The New York Times highlights a one bedroom apartment with garden space in the Flatiron District. This garden level apartment has an additional studio building at the back of the garden and Carl D’Aquino and Francine Monaco of D’Aquino Monaco have shared their amazing vision for the space...

Hot or Not? Twisted Dresser by Johnny Egg

5-5-twisted-dresser.jpg

This unique storage design from Johnny Egg adds a new twist to a classic dresser (literally): Twisted's drawers rotate...

Greenpoint Rowhouse
The New York Times 5.4.08

5-5-greenpoint-house-1.jpg

We read The New York Times' story of two male models buying a Greenpoint rowhouse with some suspicion. While we can hope that all of our readers could have the opportunity to make a living modeling for Hermes — this isn't going to happen. We did love the few pictures of the interior. The bold color choices are a great backdrop to the second-hand furnishings. One of the owners, Robin Scott said it best: “The rationale with this place is you can’t really fight what you’ve got here, you just kind of roll with it.”. We think this sums up the majority of living situations in New York City...

NEWS: T Style Magazine Design & Living Spring 2008

5-2-bouroullec-tstyle.jpgThis Sunday, the newest issue of The New York Times T Style Magazine has a Design & Living focus. While we usually read the newspaper online, we always try to purchase a physical copy of the paper when the subject matter is pertinent to Apartment Therapy. The T Style logo mini-bookshelf to the left is a still from this issue's intro video and was produced by the Bouroullec brothers!...

Hot or Not? Oil-Rubbed Bronze Modern Faucet

5-2-oil-rubbed-bronze.jpg

This image of Altman's new Nuva faucet surprised us a bit: It's one of the few modern faucets we've seen in an oil-rubbed bronze finish. Sleek and modern faucets have always been most popular in a shiny chrome or brushed finish — and oil-rubbed bronze is usually reserved for the more traditional styles...

Look! Terrain at Styer's

5-2-terrain-joy-1.jpg

Joy from Oh Joy! spent a whopping four hours at Urban Outfitters' new gardening/lifestyle venture, Terrain at Styer's. Since we haven't made it to Philadelphia to check it out for ourselves, we're inviting readers to check out Joy's amazing pictures of her visit — it's huge! And it looks like a great spring destination...

Crazy Linen Laundry Hamper from CB2

5-2-linen-hamper-2.jpg

We made sure to swing by CB2 last night on our way to the Design Meetup — we were on a mission to check out their Crazy Linen Hamper in person. First off, it's definitely not crazy. It's about as basic and practical as you can find (and we've been looking). Squared off to occupy the least amount of space, it's covered in a dark textured linen/cotton that is completely inoffensive to modern sensibilities. The snap-out interior laundry bag is gray, so it won't look dingy after a month like the white ones...

Design Ideas from the Kips Bay Decorator Show House
The New York Times 5.1.08

5-1-mud-cloth.jpgLast week, The New York Times featured a preview of this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Today, they followed up the general preview with some specific details on replicating the professionals' ideas on a budget. The ideas range from inexpensive upholstery options to contrasted pairings of furniture...
