The Metropolitan Museum is now quietly entering the blogosphere with the Cloisters' new garden blog. The Cloisters is a branch of the Met that houses Medieval art, architecture, and gardens in its own building in Fort Tryon Park in the north of Manhattan.

PlantTherapy: Using Grass as a Screen
A New Start, With Nod to the Past on the Upper West Side

Panicum virgatum. This is what caught my attention when reading Aaron's post on Gwen Calderon's apartment on the UWS apartment and the ways in which space was used.

Out on the patio this special plant was chosen to act as a screen. Learn more about it after the jump...

PlantTherapy: Seeded Eucalyptus

2008-09-12e.jpg

seeded eucalyptus and winterberry

The local florist had a nice seasonal addition to this past week's offerings, seeded eucalyptus. Although eucalyptus can be found in one variety or another throughout the year, the florists say that about now is when they start getting this in...

PlantTherapy: Saturday Morning Flowers

2008-09-27SMF.jpg

AT is wrapping up pet month, so could not resist posting these photos and story I received this past week from Heliconia:

"I was inspired by Apartment Therapy’s beautiful pictures of fresh flowers and decided to try it. All of us (the cat, my husband, and I) really enjoyed them.

However, the cat enjoyed them the most..."

Has your pet ever taken your flowers to the mat?

Squirrels and other little furry creatures absolutely love bulbs and will sniff them out in a heartbeat. Here is a potential solution, provided you can get the raw material, and the picture above is a clue...

PlantTherapy: Success!
On Making the Passion Flower Bloom

Passiflora 'Pura Vida' on my windowsill

I have enough challenges figuring out what the plants want. Today I am just going to be happy for my temporary success in making one happy. After working for over a year to get this vine enough sun, food and water, it is now rewarding me with the coolest blossoms.

Have you had any plant success lately - in the office or at home?

PlantTherapy: Saturday Morning Flowers

This week's flowers were submitted by Tamara. They blend with their environment, and prove that just a few simple flowers can transform a space. As temperatures shift here in NYC, these cool images are also the perfect segue from the heat of summer.

Enjoy a few more images of her flowers, and a link to more of her work, after the jump..

PlantTherapy: Patrick Blanc's New Book
‘The Vertical Garden’ – From Nature to the City

Prior to Blanc's recently published book I had to live off of a few web images and videos (like the one above) to get a better sense of what his work is like. Now I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of 'The Vertical Garden' which, by the reviews online, promises to have 300 gorgeouse pictures of Blanc's work from around the world.

PlantTherapy: Hot or Not?

2008-09-13GAD1.jpg

Of all the flower boxes I have seen this summer this had to be the brightest and most vibrant, not to mention there must be at least 40 linear feet of plants! Lots of people stop to stare when they walk by, but I wonder if they like it or think it's over the top...

This week's flowers come from Pamela who is enjoying the flowers that are in season right now. Her vase in her new remodeled bedroom looks like a portal into a nearby meadow!

PlantTherapy: Clean Lines of Teco Art Pottery

2008-09-10teco1.jpg

Although there are many vases out there, we think it's great to have a few well-chosen vases with useful shapes. Teco Art Pottery is a collection of vases with classic shapes and clean lines. The vases above are their most recently released shapes. This is a vase line with a history, owing their creation in part to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and a series of creative contributions from Prairie School designers.

Since the last mention of Teco on AT, Room & Board has begun carrying the vases. They have just recently marked down select colors and styles, so if you are looking to get one at a discount, and the shapes and colors float your boat, then you may want to check their website. You can take a look at the sale selection after the jump...

PlantTherapy: Huge Zucchini in Queens

2008-09-06zucch.jpg If you live out in the country, and especially here in the Northeast, you will see all sorts of competitions to judge prize vegetables at the agricultural fairs in August and September.

Not so in the city - so it was good fun to see this photo in a recent issue of the NY Daily News.
Apollonia Castitlione lives and gardens out in Glendale, Queens, and is in 'shock' over this 6' and counting zucchini.

This is not only big enough to snag a regional prize (were there one), it is also on its way to winning a world record if it continues. We hope it survived Saturday's rain and wind!

The complete story is here.

PlantTherapy: Edward Weston

image_pepper_index[1].gif Pepper, 1930

Faith's post the other week about savoring the beauty of your tomatoes reminded me of one of my favorite photographers, Edward Weston. His honest and straightforward photography brought out the simple beauty of any natural object he chose to train his lens on.

It was his famous photo of the pepper, above, that taught me to look closely at the often overlooked forms in everyday life...

PlantTherapy:A Tree Falls in Brooklyn

2008-09-06tree.jpg

I am sure Mike Pace and his crew (Santo, Brandon, and Lawrence) are rolling their eyes at this title if they are reading this. This past week I happened upon them as they were taking down a tree in Brooklyn Heights.

Although I knew the city provided this street maintenance, it was my first time to see it in action. Mike took a moment to tell us about what they do...

PlantTherapy: Baby Pineapple as a Cut Flower

2008-09-06SMF1.jpg

A quick, informal poll among my friends resulted in most thinking pineapples grow from trees. Pineapples do grow from the ground, like a flower, and in fact have stems. And so these 'baby pineapples' were truly fascinating when they appeared at the florist. Feeling the end of summer drawing near I decided to take some home to savor a bit of the tropics.
