How To: Start a No-Dig Garden ... Step by Step
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

7-16-2008car.jpg

A no-dig garden is a super easy way to A) get an organic vegetable garden up and running in no-time, and B) get rid of an unnecessary patch of lawn. Our friend Hulda takes us through the process, step by step. All you'll need is some alfalfa, straw, and a few other ingredients.

Also Wal-Mart takes another green step by phasing out illegal wood, we get some answers to a question about rain barrel alternatives, and we take a look at Al Gore's lofty environmental goals.

Jonathan's got a fruit fly problem. Actually, scratch that: Jonathan had a fruit fly problem. Using some really simple materials (you have them on hand, trust us), he got rid of the little suckers easily and without any nasty chemicals. Get his solution.

After the jump: Learn how to preserve fruit (so you don't get the flies in the first place), take part in a discussion on upgrading vs. borrowing, and help us answer this one ... do long-term house guests trump green habits?

Hot or Not? Grass Ottoman
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

7-3-2008-greenottoman.jpg

We found this Grass Ottoman while clicking through some of our favorite green sites the other day. It's really something to look at. So vivid. But is it green? And do you care? Cast your vote over at Re-nest.

Elsewhere: We get Preston Koerner -- aka Jeston Green -- to answer a few of our questions. Find out what his biggest green building pet peeve is, and find out why we followed up on an earlier "toxic shower curtain" post and what we found out. Links after the jump.

Good Question: Green Clean the Mold/Mildew in My Shower?
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

6-25-2008shower.jpg

We've got a friend who is so embarrassed by the mold and mildew in her shower, that she wouldn't allow us to use her name. "Jane" needs some help -- she wants to get rid of her unsightly shower issues without toxic cleaners. What would you do?

In other news: Jonathan's found some cheap and decent CFLs at Costco, volunteers are needed to plant an edible garden in front of City Hall in San Francisco, and we're dealing with spiders ... gently.

Dual Flush Toilet Bargain at Costco
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

6_20_2008-dualflush.jpg

Jonathan happened upon an unexpected deal on dual flush toilets at Costco. The sticker price is low and it sounds like they're not exactly bottom-of-the-line. But are they the best deal out there? Click to find out!

Also, if you've ever wanted to learn how to apply American Clay Plaster, we've found the perfect class for you. Not into plaster? Let us know how you feel about gardening at home (big or small?) and how you feel about the Whippy Light (hot or not?).

A Green Way to Get Rid of Cat Pee?
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

6_10_2008-catpee1.jpg

Jonathan is moving into a new house, and something (namely his nose) suspects that more than a few feline tenants marked the territory before he got there. So how do you get rid of the smell of cat pee? Is there a green solution?

Terrazzo is a favorite surface of many modernists, but its environmental qualities leave a lot to be desired. Trend Q looks like a viable alternative to terrazzo, with a much greener profile.

Is it Green? The Case of Durability vs. Cor-ten
From Re-nest: Our site that covers abundant design for green homes

4_16_2008-0kodiak_greenwood.jpg

We've come to terms that our long-term crush with Cor-ten could be, in reality, a short-term fling. Vinyl, despite our musings, just doesn't feel right. But where does that leave us?

The Solar Powered Outdoor Workspace by Mathias Schnyder got us excited this afternoon. We would've gladly taken our work outside and off-grid today ... but then we thought ... glare?
