Farmhouse Chic: Rugged & Elegant Inspiration

The words themselves are not a natural fit. Farmhouse being a rugged, rustic, utilitarian term. Chic being elegant, stylish and fashionable. But somehow when combined it's a match made in design heaven. A very rustic, charming heaven.

I feel like "Farmhouse Chic" = Pottery Barn's style

BTW, I don't mean that as an insult. I know some AT readers aren't fans of Pottery Barn and might take it as such, but personally, excepting their chunky upholstery, I find a lot to like about Pottery Barn. Although I generally prefer to buy antiques on Craigslist for better quality and cheaper prices.

While I love the look of it, the enclosed stove in #1 would bug the heck out of me. I have pots and pans with handles (some long) and having a wall a few inches away would block the way!

Love the combo of farm rugged and urban elegant. Great combo.

Meant to add, there is a great store in Chicago - Scout, in Andersonville, that excels at creating this look.

I agree, bitdot, and not only that, but where's the counterspace or some kind of surface to hold your ingredients as you throw them in the pot? It looks like you have to run across to the island/table to get what you need.

Good points, bitdot and nene. Those first two pics are Darryl Carter's work, if I'm not mistaken. And as much as I love, love, love his aesthetic, his interiors are sometimes more beautiful than livable.

My family and I have always loved rustic furniture and currently have several beautiful major pieces, including a rustic kitchen table and antique country pie chest up for purchase in my estate sale... http://picasaweb.google.com/eso.robinson/FURNITURE?feat=email

That room with the yellow paint is amazing. The high ceilings and great light fixture and the unexpected bright yellow paint is wonderful because it's not overwhelming.

I agree HeyNowTex! Using the yellow as the window pane trim really works.
